by UCSD

VISTA, Calif. -  Competing for the first time since October, the UC San Diego men's golf team placed fifth of 12 squads Tuesday at the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Invitational at Shadowridge Golf Club.

UCSD totaled a 59-over par 923 through three rounds. The Tritons shot a 299 and a 313 Monday and concluded the tournament with a 311 Tuesday.

Senior Lewis Simon, who was tied for first place at the end of the day Monday, was UCSD's top player, shooting a 7-over 223 to finish in a three-way tie for ninth place. Simon carded an 80 on the par-72 layout Tuesday to go along with Monday's rounds of 70 and 73. He was the only Triton to record an under-par round over the two days.

Simon had 36 total pars, the fifth-most of any player.

"We played poorly as a team today and we have a lot of things to work on," said first-year UCSD head coach Jim Ragan. "Lewis is a good putter and they just weren't falling for him today."

Texas Wesleyan took the team title with a +10, 874. The Rams shot a 284 Tuesday, the lowest team round of the tourney. Cal State San Marcos finished second (+21, 885), The Master's College was third (+31, 895) and Holy Names placed fourth (+55, 919).

The Tritons were tied with Embry-Riddle for fifth after Monday's first two rounds. The Eagles shot a 314 Tuesday and ended up in sixth.

Pedro Oveido of Holy Names was the individual medalist, finishing with a 215, 1-under par. He was the lone competitor to come in below par. Thane Ringler of The Master's College was one stroke back in second place and Jose Pablo Rolz from Texas Wesleyan was third with a 1-over 217.

Also figuring in the team scoring for UCSD were Jeff Roseth (T-21st, +15, 231), Daniel Yang (T-38th, +21, 237), David Smith (50th, +27, 243) and Clayton Yamaguchi (68th, 155). Yamaguchi completed two of three rounds.

Playing as an individual for the Tritons was Jacob Corbin, who tied for 17th with a 13-over 229.

The Shadowridge course played to a 78.69 stroke average.

UCSD next competes at Cal State San Bernardino's Coyote Classic, which will be held Feb. 24-25 at Arrowhead Country Club.
