Morris' Double-Double Not Enough, Tritons Lose at Chico State
Release: Friday 02/07/2014

CHICO, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team dropped its third straight game Friday, falling by a score of 55-42 to Chico State at Acker Gymnasium. The Tritons had a 12-point lead in the first half but made under 30 percent of their shots in the game.

The loss dropped UCSD to 11-8 overall and 8-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUC, which won its sixth consecutive contest, improved to 14-5 on the season and 10-5 in league play.

The Tritons got off to a fast start, rolling to a 12-0 lead to kick off the game. Emily Morris made back-to-back baskets during the run.

The Wildcats scored their first points at the 13:31 mark when McKenzie Dalthorp hit a jumper. That kicked off a 9-0 spree that had Chico back within three points at 11:13. A three-pointer by Sarah Rebibo tied the game, 16-16, with 5:31 left in the half and a jumper by Annie Ward at 4:43 gave the Wildcats their first lead, 18-16, at 4:43.

Chico State held its lead and was in front, 24-20, at halftime.

UCSD tied the score three times in the second half, but never regained an advantage. The final knot came with 12:40 remaining in the game when Haley Anderson's jumper made it 33-33. Dalthorp's jumper 13 seconds later put the Wildcats back up for good.

The Tritons made 28.8 percent of their shots on the night, while the Wildcats hit at a 36.7 percent clip. UCSD collected just one three-pointer, while CSUC made two.

Individually, Morris led UC San Diego with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Erin Dautremont and Rachel Marty each contributed seven points. The Tritons were playing without usual starters Miranda Seto and McKennan Bertsch.

"We were competing shorthanded and I really thought Emily stepped up," said UCSD head coach Heidi VanDerveer. "We went through a lull or two where we had trouble making baskets, but overall it was a very competitive game."

For Chico State, Dalthorp finished with a game-high 14 points on 7-for-14 shooting. Courtney Hamilton dished out 10 assists and Analise Riezebos pulled down nine boards.

The Tritons had won the previous nine meetings between the two squads.

UCSD plays at Cal State Stanislaus (11-8, 8-7) Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The Warriors defeated Cal State San Bernardino 72-63 Friday.
