Release: Saturday 02/08/2014

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No.  6 UC San Diego women’s water polo team split action at the 2014 Triton Invitational Saturday, beating Marist in the opening game 16-9 before falling to No. 11 Loyola Marymount 7-6 in the nightcap at Canyonview Aquatic Center.

UCSD received a hat-trick from Sarah Lizotte and Melissa Bartow each to power the Tritons in the win over Marist in game one. In game two, LMU mounted a comeback in the final seconds to force overtime and escape with a win despite a pair of scores from Lizotte and Alexis Wieseler.

Lizotte led the Tritons (5-1) on the day with five total scores, while Courtney Miller stopped 16 shots in the cage.

The Tritons jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the opener behind three scores from Lizotte in the first quarter. UCSD eventually led 8-3 at the intermission after tacking on three more goals in the second.

UCSD finished out the game with eight more scores on the offensive end in the final two periods to win, 16-9.

Complementing the scoring from Lizotte and Bartow, UCSD also received two goals apiece from Andie Nishimi, Wieseler and Jolene Guiliana in the victory. The scoring was rounded out by Lauren Boyer (1), Lauren Finwall (1), Emma Sasson (1) and Julia Kirkland (1). Miller recorded seven saves in the cage.

Game two was tight throughout, as UCSD and LMU were knotted at one after the opening period. The Lions scored a pair of goals to open the second quarter, but the Tritons responded with scores from Wieseler and Lizotte to tie the game at three at halftime.

After each team exchanged goals, UCSD was clinging on to a 6-5 lead with under a minute to play. After earning an ejection, LMU capitalized with a score from Alexandra Honny with eight seconds remaining to force overtime with the score 6-6 at the end of regulation.

LMU scored in the first overtime period and made it stand as the Lions shutout the Tritons in both extra periods to earn the 7-6 win.

Rounding out the scoring for UCSD alongside the four combined goals from Lizotte and Wieseler, Bartow found the back of the cage once and Guiliana also scored one goal. Miller recorded nine saves in the loss.

LMU was led by two goals from Mackenzie Beck in the win.

UCSD faces No. 12 Long Beach State tomorrow morning at 9:50 a.m. to continue play at the Triton Invitational at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
