LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 13 UC San Diego received a complete-game shutout from Alexis Edwards in game one and erupted for 12 runs in the nightcap as the Tritons swept Cal State East Bay in a doubleheader Friday at Triton Softball Field.
Scores were 4-0 and 12-9, both of the seven inning variety. UCSD improves to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) following the pair of victories, while Cal State East Bay falls to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in league play.
McKenna Clewett led the Tritons offensively in the pair of victories and totaled four hits, three RBI and two runs. Edwards powered the pitching staff by picking up her second complete game of the year and fifth win in the opener.
Game one was scoreless through 3.5 innings before the Tritons jumped on the scoreboard first in the bottom half of the fourth. The inning was led off by an Alissa Gutierrez double to center field and capped off with an RBI single from Clewett to put the Tritons ahead 1-0.
UCSD tacked on another run in the fifth following a Caitlin Brown double, a steal of third and a wild pitch to make the score 2-0. The Tritons followed with a two-run spot in bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a Bianca Devoto pinch-hit two-run homer to left field. It was the first collegiate home run for the freshman.
With the Tritons up 4-0, Edwards sealed the win with a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh. She finished with a line of seven innings, two strikeouts, one walk and five hits given up. It was her third straight start into the seventh inning.
The loss was handed to Emily Perlich of CSUEB, who finished with six full frames and four earned runs.
In the nightcap, UCSD opened the game with a pair of runs in the first to grab a 2-0 lead. Brown recorded an RBI fielder’s choice before Clewett recorded an RBI single through the right side for UCSD.
The Pioneers responded the next half inning with a five spot to grab its first lead, 5-2. CSUEB added another run in the third on a Kelsey LaVaute home run to lead 6-2 after 2.5 innings.
The bottom of the fourth proved to be the difference in the game, as the Tritons erupted for a five spot to grab a 10-6 advantage. The inning was started with a Kirsten Willmon single, who advanced to third on an error by the center fielder, and was singled home by Brown. Mya Romero added a two-RBI single and Emily McQuaid capped off the inning with an RBI single.
The Pioneers cut the Triton lead to 10-9 the following inning, but UCSD responded with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead back to 12-9. The inning was highlighted by a successful suicide squeeze by McQuaid, who brought home Amani Proctor to score.
Hannah Duarte was credited with victory after throwing 2.1 innings in relief. She allowed one hit and one earned run to improve her record to 2-0.
The offense was led by two RBI apiece from Brown, Katie Saunders, Romero and McQuaid. The Tritons pounded out 12 hits in the win, with two coming from Clewett and Saunders each.
The loss was tagged to Kelsey Cairns, who allowed nine runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings. The Pioneer offense was led by three hits and two RBI from Lauren Vestal and two hits and two RBI from LaVaute.
The four-game set continues tomorrow with a doubleheader at Triton Softball field with first pitch slated for 11 a.m.
