Tritons Place Fifth at Coyote Classic

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team shot a 307 in Tuesday's third and final round to finish in fifth place out of 17 schools at the Coyote Classic, hosted by Cal State San Bernardino at Arrowhead Country Club.

UCSD finished with a three-round total of 884, 44-over par. On Monday, the Tritons fired a 287 in the opening round and a 290 in the second round and were tied with Redlands for fourth place.

UC San Diego had two players place in the top 20 as Clayton Yamaguchi tied for 14th and Jay Lim tied for 18th. Yamaguchi totaled a 4-over 217 (68-74-75), while Lim was just behind with a 5-over 218 (74-68-76) on the par-70 Arrowhead course.

Both Yamaguchi and Lim were tied for 10th at the end of the day Monday. Their 68s were the lowest single round scores for the Tritons.

Daniel Yang (San Diego/Westview HS) tied for 43rd (+17, 227), Lewis Simon tied for 54th (+20, 230) and Jeff Roseth tied for 70th (+24, 234) for UCSD. Yang had the low round of the day for the Tritons with a 74.

California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) teams took the top two spots. Chico State, ranked seventh nationally, won the tournament with a +15, 855. Fourth-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay was seven strokes back with an 862. Dixie State placed third (+36, 876) and No. 17 Cal State Stanislaus took fourth (+39, 879).

The individual title went to Chico State's Lee Gearhart, who was the lone player to finish under par with a -1, 209. Bobby Holden of Redlands was one stroke behind in second place and Connor Van Gilder finished third with a 2-over 212.

UCSD registered 157 pars over the two days, tied for the fourth most in the field.

The course played 6,542 yards Tuesday and 6,624 yards Monday.

UCSD hosts the 64th Annual SoCal Intercollegiate March 10-11 at Maderas Golf Club in Poway. The Tritons placed seventh of 16 teams at last year's event, which was held at Mission Viejo Country Club in Orange County. Lim was the top finisher for UCSD, tying for 10th place.
