LONG BEACH, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UC San Diego women’s water polo team used a strong fourth period to down No. 12 Long Beach State, 6-4, Friday night at Campus Pool.
The Tritons improve to 11-6 overall and add a seventh victory over a ranked opponent in 2014. UCSD avenged the 9-7 loss earlier in the year against the 49ers at the Triton Invitational with the win. Long Beach State drops to 6-6 overall following the defeat.
UCSD came out strong in the first quarter, despite the rainy conditions, and scored a pair of goals to open the action. The Tritons held a 2-0 lead after the first period behind a score from Sarah Lizotte and a tally from Alexis Wieseler.
Long Beach State answered in the second quarter and found the back of the cage three times, while UCSD received a goal from Gonzales to make the score 3-3 at the intermission.
After each squad scored once in the third, the Tritons took control of the match in the final period on both sides of the pool. Miller and the defense shutout the 49er offense in the quarter, the second scoreless period of the match, while the offense scored two goals. Gonzales and Guiliana poured in a goal each to make the final 6-4 in favor of the Tritons.
Lizotte also tallied two assists in the win, while Julia Kirkland and Gonzlaes added an assist as well.
UCSD stays on the road to face No. 6 UC Irvine tomorrow in Irvine. The game is slated to begin at 12 p.m. at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
