Travis Tibbitts Selected to Compete at NCAA Championships
Release: Wednesday 03/13/2014
by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego's Travis Tibbitts has been selected to compete at the 2014 NCAA Fencing Championships, hosted by The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, March 20-23.

A sophomore sabreur from Santa Barbara, Tibbitts is making his first career appearance at nationals after putting together a successful 2013-14 regular season.

Most recently, Tibbitts placed third in men's sabre at the NCAA West Regionals, which were hosted by Caltech in Pasadena on March 8. He went 10-1 to advance to the championship round, where he defeated Stanford's Daniel Wolfson by a 15-10 score to secure third place.

In Ohio, fencers will compete in a round robin format of five-touch bouts for five rounds. The top-four finishers following round robin competition will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts. Those victors will face off to determine first and second places, with the non-advancing fencers tying for third place.

A total of 144 fencers from 25 teams will compete for championship titles in six weapon categories (men's epee, men's foil, men's sabre, women's epee, women's foil and women's sabre) at French Field House.

Rounds 1-3 of men's sabre will take place on Saturday, March 22, beginning at 11 a.m. (PT). On Sunday, March 23, rounds 4-5 will be contested at 6 a.m. (PT) with semifinals and championship bouts slated for a 10:45 a.m. (PT) start.

The 2014 NCAA Championships will be covered by live stats. In addition, ESPN3 will be broadcasting the semifinal and championship bouts live. An hour-long highlight show of the 2014 NCAA Fencing Championships will air on ESPNU at 5 p.m. (PT) on April 1.

In 2013, UCSD had a pair of fencers qualify for the NCAA Championships as Adam Campbell-Kruger and Luc Ginestet both competed in men's epee. For complete results, click here.

Though not competing as a team at the 2014 NCAA Championships, the UC San Diego men's squad received votes in the most recent CollegeFencing360.com national poll. Columbia and Penn State are tied for the top spot on the men's side, while the Princeton women are No. 1.
