Triton Women Win for Second Straight Week, Men Give Navy a Run at San Diego Collegiate Challenge
Release: Saturday 03/15/2014
by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - For the second time in as many weeks, the UC San Diego women’s track and field team won the event in which it competed, out-pointing the field in the San Diego Collegiate Challenge at Triton Track & Field Stadium on Saturday.

The Tritons (216.5) narrowly got past a contingent from Division I crosstown foe San Diego State (205) ahead of six other competing schools on the women’s side. The UCSD men (201) were second among five squads, within reach of Division I visitor Navy (213).

Junior Chantia Justice and sophomore Kristin Sato again stood out for the women in the triple jump, sharing first place with a top distance of 39’1”, an NCAA provisional qualifier, though both Tritons had eclipsed that barrier already this season. Sato also won the long jump (18’0.25”).

For the men, junior javelin thrower Nash Howe increased his top mark for the early going in 2014 to a personal-record 229’3”. He won the event over Navy’s Jay Stell (208’2”). The 2013 All-American had already achieved an automatic qualifier for the 2014 NCAA Division II Championships in his season debut one week ago with a distance of 218’10”. Saturday’s performance improved his standing at No. 2 in the all-time UCSD record book from 221’4”. He is now that much closer to older brother and current Triton volunteer assistant coach Nick Howe atop that list at 231’3”.

Other individual event winners for UCSD were Sabrina Pimentel (800, 2:15.20), San Diego product Paige Hughes (5000, 17:50.46), Tanner Collins (5000, 15:00.46) and Sean Cook (long jump, 23’0.75”).

Senior pole vaulter Clint Rosser, a national qualifier in 2013 (ninth place), earned a provisional qualifier with a top height of 15’11”, placing second.

The Triton women swept the relays. The 4x100 foursome of Amy Heins, Erica Anunwah, Sato and junior anchor Janay Pierce (San Diego/University City HS) timed a season-best 47.35 to cross first, falling just short of a provisional qualifier (47.11). The 4x400 quartet of Pimentel, Jackie Chalmers, Ellexi Snover and freshman anchor Lauren Lopez (Oceanside/Carlsbad HS) went 3:50.66, also a season best.

Markus Woods, Jared Senese (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS), Sam Ozenbaugh (Poway/Poway HS) and Derek Van de Streek took the men’s 4x400 in a season-best 3:18.44.

Junior Anthony Capitulo also turned in a provisional in third in the javelin behind Howe with a mark of 193’2”, though he had already achieved one this season.

Woods shaved another .42 seconds off of his best time in placing second (54.97) in the 400 hurdles after back-to-back first-place efforts for the freshman in the event.

“It was another impressive performance from both teams," said UCSD men’s head coach Tony Salerno. “It was a tremendous surprise to have the men’s team within 12 points of a very good Navy team.”

“The women’s team’s win is another great showing of depth and strength against some tough competition,” added Triton women’s head coach Darcy Ahner. “Both teams stepped it up to another level of confidence and competitiveness.”

Following a break for winter quarter final exams, UCSD resumes the 2014 competitive season with the Aztec Invitational, March 28-29.
