SAN DIEGO – The 13th-ranked UC San Diego women’s water polo team swept action at Aztec Aquaplex Sunday to finish 3-1 at the Aztec Invite. The Tritons opened with a victory over Harvard, 15-7, before finishing with a win over Wagner, 11-8.
The Tritons improve to 17-9 overall following the pair of wins. The sweep also gives head coach Brad Kreutzkamp win No. 100 in his career as a Triton.
In the opener, UCSD used strong first and third quarters to down Harvard, 15-7.
The Tritons jumped on the scoreboard first with a Lizotte score and found the back of the cage four more times before the period ended to lead 5-1 after one. The Tritons added three the following period to hold an 8-3 lead at the intermission.
UCSD continued the offensive onslaught in the third period by scoring five times in the third period to lead 13-4 after three quarters. The Tritons finished off the victory by scoring twice in the final period to win 15-7.
Lizotte led the Triton offensive attack with four goals, while Bartow poured in three scores. Laurel Kistler added a pair of scores and Jolene Guiliana, Lauren Boyer, Emma Sasson, Leah Gonzales, Julia Kirkland and Alexis Wieseler rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece.
Miller finished with 17 saves in the cage for UCSD.
The finale proved to be a tight match throughout the first half before the Tritons took control in the third quarter to distance themselves from Wagner and win 11-8.
Each squad found the back of the cage once in the first period before UCSD outscored the Seahawks 3-2 in the second period. UCSD held a 4-3 advantage at halftime.
The Tritons managed three more scores in the third quarter and provided a strong defensive effort to hold Wagner to a single score. The solid third period provided a 7-4 lead as the game headed to the final quarter.
UCSD closed out the win by matching the Seahawks goal-for-goal in the fourth as each side found the goal four times to make the final 11-8.
Bartow led the charge offensively and tallied four scores, while Lizotte amassed a pair of scores for UCSD. The scoring was rounded out by Andie Nishimi, Wieseler, Kirkland, Kistler and Boyer, who scored a goal apiece.
Miller finished with 12 blocks in the cage for UCSD.
The Tritons return home to Canyonview Aquatic Center next Sunday, Mar. 23 to face No. 3 Stanford. The opening sprint is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
