GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Clayton Yamaguchi recorded a pair of under-par rounds as the UC San Diego men's golf squad placed 15th of 20 teams Tuesday at the Mustang Intercollegiate, hosted by Western New Mexico at Palm Valley Golf Club outside of Phoenix.

As a team, UCSD totaled a +25 889 over three rounds of play on the par-72, 7,015-yard course. The Tritons went 294-298 Monday and closed with a 297 Tuesday.

Yamaguchi, a sophomore from Los Angeles, carded a 2-over par 218 through three rounds to finish tied for 22nd. He shot 71-77 in Monday's first two rounds and followed with a 70 in Tuesday's third and final round. Yamaguchi's 70 was the low round by any Triton during the tournament.

Host Western New Mexico came from behind to win the team title. Four strokes back at the end of Monday, the 10th-ranked Mustangs won by eight strokes with a total of 853, 11-under par. No. 9 Cal State Stanislaus, the leader entering Tuesday's play, finished second (861), while third-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay was third (863).

Colorado State-Pueblo's Alex Tiong held off Colorado Mesa's Colin Prater in a playoff to win the individual medalist title after both finished with 8-under 208's. WNMU's Thomas Neve was just behind, placing third with a 209.

Also competing for UCSD were Lewis Simon (T-38th, +5 221), Jeff Roseth (71st, +12 228), Daniel Yang (T-72nd, +13 229) and Jay Lim (T83rd, +16 232).

UCSD was tied for 11th after Monday's two rounds.

The Tritons play in one final tournament prior to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships, taking part in the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational, April 14-15 in Turlock. The event can be followed by live scoring.
