UCSD Competes Against Top National Crews at Covered Bridge Regatta in Oregon

LOWELL, Ore. - Hitting the road following last week's San Diego Crew Classic, the UC San Diego women's rowing team competed against the West Region's top squads Saturday at the Covered Bridge Regatta on Dexter Lake.

Going up against Division I and Division II crews, UCSD fielded Varsity 8, JV 8, Varsity 4, JV 4 and Novice 4 boats.

In the Varsity 8 race, the Tritons rowed to a fifth-place finish in 7:22.00 on the 2,000-meter course. Portland won in 7:02.06, Western Washington was second with a time of 7:02.40, Seattle placed third in 7:07.09 and Humboldt State came in fifth at 7:07.58. Behind UCSD were Lewis in sixth (7:23.14) and Seattle Pacific in seventh (7:49.34).

UCSD's JV 8 placed fifth of five crews, recording a time of 7:41.23. Portland won the race in 7:10.60.

The Tritons' Varsity 4 boat was also fifth of five crews, posting a time of 8:13.17. Humboldt State was victorious in 7:57.42.

UCSD's best finish came in the JV 4 event, where the Tritons placed second with a time of 7:56.29, behind Western Washington's winning time of 7:49.40. UCSD crossed in front of Humbold State, Portland, Lewis, Seattle Pacific and Oregon. The same group won the Varsity 4 Grand Final at last week's San Diego Crew Classic for the second straight year.

UCSD clocked an 8:51.73 to finish fourth in the Novice 4 race. Portland took the win in 8:32.60. The Tritons bested Cal, Lewis and Humboldt State.

In the CRCA/USRowing National Poll, Western Washington is ranked second, Humboldt State is fourth and UCSD is tied with Central Oklahoma for fifth. In the West Region, UCSD is third overall, second in Varsity 4 and third in Varsity 8.

UCSD now takes a week off from competition to prepare for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships, which will be held April 26-27 on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
