TURLOCK, Calif. - Following two rounds of play Monday at the 41st Hanny Stanislaus Invitational, the UC San Diego men's golf team is tied for 11th of 19 squads. Cal State Stanislaus is hosting the 54-hole tournament at the Turlock Golf & Country Club.

UCSD, tied for 20th in the national rankings, shot a 309 in the opening round and improved by 10 strokes in the second round, firing a 299 for a total of 608, 32-over par. The Tritons are in a four-way tie for 11th with Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State San Marcos and No. 18 Sonoma State.

"We did not play well in the first round," said UCSD head coach Jim Ragan. "However, the guys made some nice adjustments and really improved their play during the afternoon round."

Third-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay and fourth-ranked Chico State are tied for the lead. Both teams shot 585, 9-over par. Cal State Stanislaus, ninth in the national rankings, sits in third with a two-round total of 588, 12-over.

Individually, Lewis Simon is UCSD's top player thus far, tied for 28th with a 7-over par 151. Simon shot a 73 in round one and a 78 in the second round.

Also competing for the Tritons are Jay Lim (T-34th, 152), Clayton Yamaguchi (T-34th, 152), Daniel Yang (T-45th, 153) and Jeff Roseth (90th, 164). Yamaguchi's 71 in the second round was the lone under-par round for any Triton on the day.

Lee Gearhart of Chico State tops the individual leaderboard with a 3-under 141. He shot a 69 in round one and a 72 in round two. Cal State Monterey Bay's Anton Rosen and Central Missouri's Robby Hughey are tied for second, each with a 2-under 142, just one stroke behind the leader.

The top eight golfers are separated by just three strokes.

The Tritons were tied for 13th after the day's first round.

"We have a chance to post a solid finish if we continue to improve tomorrow," said Ragan.

Tuesday's third and final round is set for a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on the par-72, 6,641-yard layout. Action can be followed by live scoring.

Cal State Stanislaus won the 2013 tournament by two strokes over Cal State Monterey Bay. Warrior Trevor Clayton was the individual medalist as the only player to shoot under par. UCSD placed sixth and Lim was the top Triton, tying for 16th place.
