Golfers Move Up to Finish Ninth at Hanny Stanislaus Invitational
Release: Tuesday 04/15/2014
by UCSD

TURLOCK, Calif. - The 20th-ranked UC San Diego men's golf team finished ninth of 19 squads Tuesday at the 41st Hanny Stanislaus Invitational, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus at the Turlock Golf & Country Club.

UCSD improved its standing by four spots over the two-day, 54-hole tournament. The Tritons were tied for 13th after the first round and tied for 11th following the second round.

The team totaled a 906, 42-over par on the par-72, 6,641-yard course. UCSD posted its best round of the tourney Tuesday, firing a 298 after shooting a 309 and a 299 Monday.

UC San Diego's top individual was Jay Lim, who tied for 26th with a 10-over 226. The junior from La Cañada fired a 78 and a pair of 74s. Lim was tied for 34th after Monday's first two rounds.

Third-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay won the event with an 8-over 872. The Otters shot a 287 Tuesday, the low round of the tournament.

Fourth-ranked Chico State, which was tied for the lead with CSUMB at the end of Monday, wound up second, three strokes back with an 11-over 875. Cal State Stanislaus, ranked ninth nationally, placed third, totaling an 880, 16-over par.

Trevor Clayton of Cal State Stanislaus and Lee Gearhart of Chico State shared the individual title, both finishing 2-under with a 214. Monterey Bay's Dylan Jackson placed third as the only other golfer to finish under par with a 215.

Clayton won the tournament in 2013 as the only player to finish under par.

Also on course for the Tritons were Clayton Yamaguchi (T-29th, 227), Lewis Simon (T-35th, 229), Daniel Yang (T-35th, 229) and Jeff Roseth (T-74th, 237). Yamaguchi's 71 in round two was the lone under-par round by any Triton. Roseth shot 81-83 Monday, but rebounded to card a 73 Tuesday, UCSD's low round of the day.

Next week, UCSD travels to Stockton, Calif., to compete at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships. The tournament will be played at Brookside Country Club on Monday and Tuesday, April 21 and 22.
