Tritons Second After First Day of Play at CCAA Championship
Release: Tuesday 04/22/2014
by UCSD

STOCKTON, Calif. - Following 36 holes of play Tuesday at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship at Brookside Country Club, UC San Diego is in second place of eight teams.

UCSD totaled a 585, 9-over par, for the two rounds, opening the tournament with a 298 and following with a solid 287 in the second round. Three Tritons are among the top-10 individuals in the 40-player field as Jay Lim is tied for sixth, while Lewis Simon and Clayton Yamaguchi are tied for ninth.

Cal State Stanislaus holds a 19-stroke lead with a 10-under 566. Cal State Monterey Bay is in third place, one stroke behind UCSD. Chico State is fourth, Cal State San Bernardino is fifth, Sonoma State sits in sixth, Cal State Dominguez Hills is seventh and Cal State East Bay rounds out the field in eighth.

On the individual leader board, Stanislaus owns three of the top four spots, with Warrior Trevor Clayton in first with a 7-under 137. He holds a four-stroke lead over teammate Anthony Manguray.

Lim totaled a 1-over 145 on the day, shooting a 73 in round one and an even-par 72 in round two. Simon and Yamaguchi are one stroke behind, each carding a 146. Yamaguchi's 71 in the second round was the lowest score posted by any Triton.

Also competing for UCSD, Daniel Yang can also be found in the top 15 as he is tied for 12th with a 148, 4-over par. Jeff Roseth is in 29th place after shooting an 11-over 155.

Lim and Roseth were among five players to record an eagle.

“I’m happy with the progress the team is making," said UCSD head coach Jim Ragan. "We’re getting better each tournament and now each round. Today, we got off to a good start, but didn’t quite finish as well as we would have liked. Hopefully, we can do that tomorrow.”

Half of the teams competing are ranked among the nation's top 25, including No. 4 Cal State Monterey Bay, No. 5 Chico State, No. 13 Cal State Stanislaus and No. 23 Sonoma State. UCSD is receiving votes in the most recent coaches' poll.

Cal State Monterey Bay won the 2013 team title, while UCSD placed fifth. CSUMB's Brandon Hortt was the individual medalist and Yamaguchi was the Tritons' top finisher in third.

Wednesday's third and final round gets underway at 7:30 a.m. on the par-72, 6,720-yard course. Action can be followed via live scoring.
