Day One of Triton Invitational Complete
Release: Friday 04/25/2014

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Three women’s throwing events took place on the first day of the Triton Invitational Friday on the campus of UC San Diego.

All three events Friday were held at the UCSD Throwing Field, adjacent to Triton Track & Field Stadium. The women’s hammer throw led things off, with 2008 and 2012 Olympian Amber Campbell (234’1”) the winner over Olympic hopefuls Britney Henry (219’3”) and Taylor Bush (217’10”). Triton underclassmen Savanna Forry (118’4”) and Valerie Francis (118’2”) placed 42nd and 43rd, respectively.

In the invitational section of the discus, it was Whitney Ashley of the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista taking top honors with a long toss of 209’3”, edging 2012 Olympian Gia Lewis-Smallwood (207’7”). Ashley is a former San Diego State standout and 2012 NCAA outdoor champion in the discus. Her mark Friday rates seventh in the world this year.

UCSD senior Eva Isaacs posted a personal-record distance of 142’9” in the open section of the discus to complete the Friday activity. The mark left her narrowly short of the NCAA provisional standard for Division II of 143’2”. Isaacs’ previous best was 140’4” from just a week prior at her same home venue. She placed 29th out of 45 competitors who registered a fair throw. Lara Crutchley won with a toss of 174’7”, with USC sophomore Tera Novy (173’11”) and Kansas sophomore Dasha Tsema (173’1”) behind her.

The Triton Invitational concludes on Saturday at Triton Track & Field Stadium, with throwing events beginning at 10 a.m., jumping events at 11 a.m., and the action on the track also getting underway at 11 a.m. Tops among a marquee program with an elite field full of U.S. and international Olympians and Olympic hopefuls will be Ashton Eaton, the reigning Olympic and world decathlon champion and decathlon world-record-holder who is entered in the 400-meter hurdles. Eaton is in the first and fastest of four heats, slated for an approximate 3:40 p.m. start.
