by UCSD

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's rowing team recorded a strong day of racing on Lake Natoma Saturday, advancing all three of its boats to Grand Finals at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships.

UCSD, ranked fifth nationally, qualified its Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and Novice 8 crews for Sunday's Grand Finals.

"It was a great team performance today," said UCSD head coach Colin Truex. "Getting every boat into Grand Finals is something we can all be proud of and we'll be going for some hardware tomorrow."

In Saturday's Division II/Division III/Club Varsity 8 heats, UC San Diego finished second with a time of 7:12.70, exactly 12 seconds behind winner Humboldt State, currently ranked fourth in the country. The Tritons edged out UC Davis, which crossed the finish line in 7:13.00 for third place. UC Santa Barbara was fourth (7:18.90) and Pacific Lutheran placed fifth (7:23.60).

Heat one was won handily by second-ranked Western Washington, which posted a time of 7:01.40, seven seconds in front of Puget Sound.

The top three finishers from each heat qualified for Sunday's Grand Final, which will take place at 11:50 a.m. In the field with UCSD will be Western Washington, Humboldt State, Puget Sound, Lewis & Clark and UC Davis.
