Release: Monday 05/05/2014

AUSTIN, Texas -  The UC San Diego men's golf team is sitting in 11th place of 20 squads following the opening round of the NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional Monday at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin, Texas.

UCSD totaled a 17-over par 305 through its first 18 holes. The Tritons are the seventh seed of 10 teams from the West.

Cal State Monterey Bay leads the field with an even-par 288, three strokes in front of second-place St. Edward's, which is hosting the regional. Chico State rounds out the top three with a 5-over 293.

Daniel Yang (San Diego/Westview HS) is the Tritons' top golfer. The sophomore is tied for 22nd place after firing a 2-over 74 on the par-72, 6,909-yard course. Yang chipped in from behind the green to eagle the par-5 17th hole.

There is a tie atop the individual leaderboard as Brandon Hortt of Cal State Monterey Bay and Andres Rodas of St. Edward's each came in with a 3-under 69. Four other players in the 108-competitor field finished under par in Monday's first round.

Also playing for UCSD are sophomore Clayton Yamaguchi (T-32nd, 75), senior Lewis Simon (T-55, 77), junior Jay Lim (T-71, 79) and sophomore Jeff Roseth (T-89, 82).

Seven of the South Central/West Regional teams are ranked among the nation's top-25, including Cal State Monterey Bay (No. 3), Chico State (No. 5), Western New Mexico (No. 9), Cal State Stanislaus (No. 12), St. Edward's (No. 18), Hawaii Hilo (No. 22) and Sonoma State (No. 23).

UC San Diego, Colorado School of Mines, Cameron, Simon Fraser, Dallas Baptist and Western Washington are receiving votes in the most recent GolfWorld/Nike Coaches' Poll.

UCSD's lineup in Texas led the team to an impressive showing at the CCAA Championship in Stockton April 22-23, as it equaled its best-ever league finish with a third-place showing. Three Tritons placed in the top-10 individually as Simon tied for eighth, while Lim and Yang tied for 10th. Yamaguchi tied for 24th, while Roseth tied for 28th.

UCSD has finished among the top-10 in eight of nine tournaments it has competed in this season.

Last season, UCSD placed 18th of 20 teams at the NCAA South Central/West Regional, played at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash. Yamaguchi was the Tritons' top finisher, tying for 54th place in the 108-man field. Simon tied for 61st and Lim tied for 82nd.

Following regional play, the NCAA Championship will take place May 19-23 at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich. The top six teams from the South Central/West Regional, as well as the top two individuals not competing with a team, will advance to Michigan.

Three other sites are hosting regional competition with the following pairings: Atlantic/East, Central/Midwest and South/Southeast.

UCSD tees off at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday in second round action. The entire tournament is covered by live stats.
