Team captain of the 1994 men’s water polo team and a member of three Western Water Polo Association championship teams during his four-year career at UCSD, Gruber also spent one summer as an undergraduate interning for Saratoga Derivates, a London-based derivatives trading firm—an opportunity afforded by another former UCSD water polo player, Toby Raymond.
That internship led to a full-time position with Saratoga Derivatives, helping set up their American presence. After training in London, Gruber spent three years trading in the S&P stock index pit in Chicago. Following that, he returned to London as the company’s Head of Interest Rates. Saratoga continued to grow worldwide and changed its name to Mako Global Derivates.
In 2003, Gruber left Mako to join Liquid Capital where his role now includes managing the organization’s European Interest Rate Derivatives Desk and interacting with bankers and brokers globally.
In November of 2004, he married his wife, Rowena, on a vineyard outside of Cape Town in her native South Africa. The couple lives in London and although Gruber no longer plays water polo, he stays active by cycling competitively in England and France.
