LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego student-athletes Luke Calkins, Alyssa Dixon-Word and Brian Donohoe were each named Thursday to the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-District® Men’s and Women’s At-Large First Teams for the NCAA Division II District 8, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The awards recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Donohoe, a senior on the men’s water polo squad, is now a three-time honoree, while Calkins, a junior on the men’s swimming and diving team, has been chosen for the second year in a row. The distinction is a first for Dixon-Word, a senior in the women’s crew program.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America selections will be revealed next month. Donohoe made the Academic All-America First Team a year ago. Calkins was a third-team pick as a sophomore.
UCSD and Alaska Fairbanks were the only two schools to have multiple student-athletes on the men’s list among a total of 11 recognized, each with two.
Calkins is a native of Kansas City, Kan., who graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School. The diver made his third straight trip to the NCAA Division II Championships in March, earning All-America honorable mention with a 16th-place finish in the three-meter event. He was previously third in the one-meter competition and second from three meters at the conference meet. Calkins maintains a 3.95 grade-point average in mechanical engineering.
Donohoe, a utility player out of Upland and La Verne’s Damien High School, helped guide the Tritons to a 16-8 overall mark in 2012 and the title game of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships back in November. Donohoe made the All-Tournament First Team, completing his final season with 28 goals and 15 assists. A history major with a minor in general biology, Donohoe boasts a 3.97 GPA.
Dixon-Word and her fellow UCSD rowers are still in season, hoping to secure a bid to the NCAA Division II Championships when the official announcement is made this coming Monday, May 20, at 2 p.m. PT. A fourth-year Triton and two-year team captain, she aided the Varsity 4+ boat to a bronze medal at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship Regatta last month, earning a spot on the All-WIRA Second Team. A product of Oroville and Las Plumas High School, Dixon-Word has a 3.69 GPA in human biology.
Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be a starter or important contributor to be eligible for the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District teams.
