UCSD Suffers Saturday Setback Against Aggies, 12-11

LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 10 UC San Diego fell in sudden-victory overtime 12-11 against No. 17 UC Davis Saturday at Canyonview. In a thrilling back-and-forth game, the Tritons received a career-high six goals from Joe Dietrich in the loss.

UCSD falls to 12-11 on the year and finishes 4-1 in Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) action, while UC Davis improves to 11-12 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Tritons with be awarded a No. 1 or No. 2 seed at the conference tournament on Nov. 22-23, depending on how UC Davis fares in its last two WWPA games. The Aggies face No. 14 Santa Clara and Air Force next week and can clinch the top seed with one victory.

With the score 5-4 at intermission, UC Davis came out in the third and scored three times before beginning the final period with a goal. The Aggies grabbed its biggest lead of the match, 9-6, with 6:05 left in regulation with the score from Austin Beckwith.

The Tritons, who were coming off a thrilling comeback victory the night before, created more magic in front of the home crowd with four straight goals to grab its first lead of the afternoon at 10-9 with 18 seconds remaining. Dietrich powered home four straight scores into the back on the net to put UCSD in position to win. The Aggies responded following a timeout, however, scoring with nine seconds remaining on the clock to force overtime.

After UC Davis notched the first goal of the overtime period, UCSD answered in the second overtime quarter with 2:33 remaining with a goal from Luca De Vivo that was set-up from a nice find from Andy Moore. The tally stood the remaining amount of time to force a sudden-victory situation.

The Aggies were awarded a man-up advantage to start the sudden-victory timeframe after an ejection was drawn with one second remaining in the previous period. UCD capitalized on the advantage by winning the sprint and quickly set up a goal from Bernie Rogers to win the game, 12-11.

The Aggies were led by Teddy Nicholson’s four goals, while also receiving two scores apiece from Rogers and Beckwith. Goalkeeper Philip Bates recorded 10 saves in the win.

UCSD was powered by the six scores from Dietrich, along with two from Moore and one apiece from Chase Cockerill, Nick Alexander and De Vivo, respectively. Cameron Ravanbach (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) blocked nine shots in the cage in the loss.

UCSD honored Tommy Friedrich (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) before the game on senior day, playing in his final home game at Canyonview Aquatic Center.

The Tritons conclude regular season action next week on the road, facing No. 7 Long Beach State and No. 8 UC Irvine. UCSD will face the 49ers on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. before taking on the Anteaters on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.
