Release: Thursday 02/13/2014

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Denny Harper was honored as the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year and four UC San Diego men’s water polo players were named to the 2013 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America Division II team, announced Thursday.

Joe Dietrich, Tommy Friedrich, Cameron Ravanbach and David Higginson were selected as members of the ACWPC All-America team, giving UCSD four of the eight players honored on the team. It marks the first such career awards for all-four members, while Harper earns his seventh honor since 2000 and his third consecutive Coach of the Year award.

Coach Harper, who completed his 34th season at the helm, led the Tritons to their 16th WWPA title and 12th appearance at the NCAA Championship in 2013. UCSD finished the year ranked No. 11 and 14-14 overall.

Dietrich, a junior from Lafayette, was also tabbed a NCAA Division I All-America Honorable Mention selection by the ACWPC. He put together a well-rounded season of 45 goals, 30 assists and 23 steals and was also named to Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) First Team.

Friedrich, a senior from Carlsbad, led the Tritons in goals scored with 48. He was named to the All-WWPA Second Team, as well to the WWPA All-Academic Team earlier in the year.

Ravanbach, a junior from La Jolla, recorded 299 saves in 2013, the second-highest total in school history. The co-captain entered the UCSD career top-10 all-time saves list this season with 503 career blocks. Ravanbach was tabbed an All-WWPA First Team selection in 2013 as well.

Higginson, a junior from San Diego, finished the year with 40 goals, 32 assists and 28 steals. The co-captain was also named to the All-WWPA Honorable Mention team.

UCSD only loses Friedrich to graduation in 2014 and returns Josh Stiling, the 2012 ACWPC Player of the Year, and Lukas Syka to build on last year’s squad.
