Three Tritons Named Academic All-Americans
Release: Thursday 06/05/2013
by UCSD

TOWSON, Md. - UC San Diego student-athletes Luke Calkins, Alyssa Dixon-Word and Brian Donohoe were each named Wednesday to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men’s and Women’s At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Calkins and Donohoe were men's first-team selections, while Dixon-Word made the women's third team.

The awards recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. All three Tritons had advanced to the Capital One Academic All-America® ballot on the basis of being chosen as first-team Academic All-District® honorees last month for District 8.

Donohoe, a senior tri-captain on the men’s water polo squad, was a first-team Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men’s At-Large choice in 2012. Calkins, a junior diver, was a third-team pick as a sophomore a year ago. The recognition is a first for Dixon-Word, a senior in the women’s crew program.

Calkins is a native of Kansas City, Kan., who graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School. The diver made his third straight trip to the NCAA Division II Championships in March, earning All-America honorable mention with a 16th-place finish in the three-meter event while also taking 18th from one meter. He was previously third in the one-meter competition and second from three meters at the conference meet. Calkins maintains a 3.95 grade-point average in mechanical engineering.

Donohoe, a utility player out of Upland and La Verne’s Damien High School, helped guide the Tritons to a 16-8 overall mark in 2012 and the title game of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships back in November. Tabbed an Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Division II All-American for the third year in a row, Donohoe completed his final season with 28 goals, 15 assists and 30 steals. He boasts a 3.97 GPA in history with a minor in general biology.

Dixon-Word was a member of the UCSD Varsity 8 crew that produced a third-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Division II Women’s Rowing Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., on June 2. A fourth-year Triton and two-year team captain, she aided the Varsity 4+ boat to a bronze medal at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship Regatta in late April, earning a spot on the All-WIRA Second Team. A product of Oroville and Las Plumas High School, Dixon-Word has a 3.69 GPA in human biology.

Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be a starter or important contributor to be eligible for consideration as Capital One Academic All-America®.

The Division II men’s at-large program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. The sports grouping for the women consists of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.

Mark Rubin, a senior swimmer at the University of the Incarnate Word with a 3.98 GPA in biology, was named as the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year for the Division II Men’s At-Large program. Ashland University swimmer Julie Widmann, a marketing major with a 3.90 GPA, earned the women’s award.

Calkins is one of seven swimmers and divers on the men’s first team. Donohoe is the only water polo player. The Triton duo is among eight repeat selections from 2012, out of 15 first-teamers in all. UCSD and St. Cloud State are the only two schools with a pair of first-team men’s honorees.
