- The UC San Diego men's and women's water polo teams had a combined nine student-athletes named to the 2009-10 Western Water Polo Association All-Academic Teams, it was announced Thursday. All told, a record 156 student-athletes earned spots on the All-Academic squad.
From the men's squad, Ian Bausback, Brian Donohoe, Steven Donohoe, Kneif Lohse, Sean Roberts and Peter Gresham were honored. Kirsten Bates, Stephanie Bocian and Hanalei Crowell earned All-Academic awards on the women's side.
The WWPA All-Academic Team consists of members who carried a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), played in at least 50-percent of their team's contests in that season and were classified as a full-time student who has completed a minimum of one semester or two quarters at their institution.
The UCSD men's team finished the year with a 14-14 mark and fell short in the WWPA championship game by a 5-4 score against Loyola Marymount.
UCSD's Gresham, Roberts and David Morton were all ACWPC First-Team honorees, earning All-American honors. Steven Donohoe was named the NCAA D-II Player of the Year.
The women's team recovered from a slow start to return to the WWPA title game, where they suffered a 13-10 loss to LMU. The Tritons advanced to the championship game by defeating Sonoma State and Colorado State, appearing in the title game for the first time in six years.
Bates, Stephanie Heinrich, Markayla Quane and Audra Bloom earned All-WWPA honors.
