LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's water polo team
(2-2), ranked 11th nationally for the second-straight week, will begin its
first road stretch of the 2010 season with a Friday 4 p.m. match at Cal
Lutheran (0-4) before a 12 p.m. Saturday contest at No. 6 UC Santa Barbara
This past weekend at the Triton Invitational, UCSD picked up a season-opening
11-6 victory over Air Force as senior Ryan Allred led the Tritons with four
goals in that game. After losses to Loyola Marymount and Pacific, UCSD
concluded the two-day tournament with a 16-3 rout of La Verne.
Aside from Allred, redshirt junior William Brown has also provided a boost to
the Tritons' offense through the early going. Brown tallied seven scores in the
season's first four matches.
The last meeting between the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran and the Tritons took
place on Sept. 6, 2009. The match ended in a 17-6 win for UCSD, with 2010
returners Lance Curtiss and Brian Donohoe notching two goals apiece. Just last
weekend, the CLU squad traveled to Boston, Mass., to take place in the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology Tournament.
Saturday's opponent, UCSB, is also a familiar foe to UCSD. The two squads met
twice in La Jolla during 2009, with the Gauchos winning 15-12 in the season
opener and then topping the Tritons 9-7 in mid-October. UCSD defeated UCSB on
two occasions in the 2008 campaign. In
recent competition the Gauchos have played a series of exhibition matches
against the likes of Pepperdine and UCLA but the only official contest so far
this season for UCSB was a 15-3 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this past Sunday.
