LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 14th-ranked UC San Diego men's water
polo team, having played 10 matches in the span of 15 days to start the season,
will focus on a single contest this week as the Tritons host Chapman on
Thursday at 6 p.m.
With classes beginning Thursday, the water polo match at Canyonview Aquatic
Center will be the first opportunity for new students to see the Tritons in
action. For fans that won't be on campus Thursday, UCSD will be providing a
live webcast that can be accessed by clicking on the link at the top of this
story. The coverage will begin at approximately 5:45 p.m.
The Tritons' squad holds an overall record of 5-5, having finished the NorCal
Tournament with two victories on Sunday. UCSD defeated 19th-ranked Air Force,
11-9, led by Brian Donohoe's three goals, and later knocked off 16th-ranked
Navy, 9-6, as Kevin Driscoll tallied three scores.
David Morton, named a Division II All-American for the 2009 season, has picked
up where he left off last year and has shined defensively for UCSD's 2010
squad. So far this year, Morton has collected 81 saves while allowing 53 goals.
This past weekend against 6th-ranked UC Santa Barbara, he matched his
season-high total of 14 saves in a single match.
The Tritons have featured a balanced offensive attack, with senior Ryan Allred collecting
double-digit totals in goals (14), assists (14) and steals (11). While Allred
leads the squad in goals and assists, Donohoe paces the team in steals with 15.
The visiting Panthers of CU enter Thursday's match with a .500 record as well,
at 3-3 overall. CU dropped its first two matches of the season to AFA but
rebounded with three-straight victories over Vanguard, La Verne and Caltech.
Chase Parlee highlights the Panthers' attack, totaling 16 goals and 13 steals
through the early going. A fellow senior, Stephen Neville, also has played a
large role in the offense during 2010 with 10 goals and 16 assists.
The first 1,000 students in attendance at Thursday's match will receive complimentary
Thundersticks.
