LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team (12-11) earned the No. 3 seed in the Western Water Polo Association Tournament, it was announced on Monday afternoon. The Tritons are in search of their 15th WWPA title and first since the 2006 campaign.

UCSD will face No. 6 seeded Pomona-Pitzer (16-16) on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Sullivan Aquatic Center on the campus of Santa Clara. Loyola Marymount, who finished the season 16-8 overall, earned the tournament's No. 1 seed. No. 2 seed UC Davis matched LMU with a WWPA record of 13-1, but a 6-1 victory by the Lions over the Aggies on Nov. 5 allowed LMU to take the top seed. UCD and LMU will both earn a bye to the quarterfinals.

Rounding out the rest of the tournament is No. 4 Santa Clara, No. 5 Claremont, No. 7 Air Force, No. 8 Redlands, No. 9 Whittier and No. 10 Chapman.

The Tritons come into the weekend having won two of their last three contests, including a 13-8 win over first round foe Pomona-Pitzer on Nov. 7. The UCSD-Pomona-Pitzer winner will advance to play in the semifinals on Saturday at 11:40 a.m.

The championship match is slated for Sunday at 1:30 p.m., with the winner earning an automatic bid to the 2010 National Collegiate Men's Water Polo Championship hosted by Cal Dec. 4-5.

Brian Donohoe led all Triton goal scorers with 42 goals on the year and concluded the regular season with a five-goal outburst against the Sagehens. Ryan Allred is second on the team in goals and assists, tallying 29 and 23, respectively. John Butler has two more assists on the year than Allred.

Loyola Marymount has won three consecutive WWPA titles. Since 2000, UCSD and LMU are the only two schools that have captured a WWPA championship.

The Tritons fell, 5-4, to the Lions in the championship match in 2009. The teams were tied 4-4 going into the final period, but LMU's Max Schlegel broke the deadlock with 4:01 left and championships MVP Andy Stevens made 14 saves in goal to preserve the Lion win. In 2008, LMU also beat UCSD in the championship match, 12-10.
