LONG BEACH, Calif. - No. 9 UC San Diego was less than 10 seconds away from taking down its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent this season, but No. 12 Long Beach State rallied for two late goals to take a 9-8 overtime win in non-conference play at Campus Pool on Wednesday afternoon.

Josh Stiling broke a 7-7 tie to give UCSD the lead by one with 3:34 remaining in the match. UCSD would hold that lead until the final 10 seconds of the fourth quarter, when Nick Rascon scored out of a 49er timeout with seven seconds to play to force overtime. LBSU notched the game-winner a minute and half into the first overtime as the Tritons were unable to score in the extra period.

The loss moves the Tritons to 11-5 overall on the year while LBSU improves to 11-6.

UCSD and LBSU combined for nine goals in the opening quarter; Brian Donohoe scored twice and David Higginson and Joe Dietrich added a goal, but LBSU took a 5-4 lead into the second period. Graham Saber evened the score at 5-5 with 3:26 remaining in the second, but the 49ers managed to sneak another in before halftime.

LBSU took a two-goal lead with 2:49 to play in the third quarter, but the Tritons managed to score three consecutive goals, capped off by Stiling's goal to give UCSD it's first lead of the game, 8-7, with just over three minutes to play. However, LBSU's two late goals spoiled what would have been quite a UCSD comeback.

The Tritons return to the pool on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. against No. 5 UC Santa Barbara at Canyonview Pool.
