Saturday, September 8 • 12:00 p.m.
No. 11 UCSD at No. 5 UC Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara, Calif.

SCOUTING THE GUACHOS: UC Santa Barbara opened the 2012 campaign this past weekend with a pair of games at the UCLA Invitation. The Guachos posted two victories, the closest with a seven point lead over Cal Baptist (13-6). The second match was a bit of a blowout as UCSB defeated Claremont Mudd Scripps 19-2. The Guachos are coming off a 16-12 overall record in 2011.

WHEN WE LAST MET UC SANTA BARBARA: Chase Racich scored three goals, including two in the decisive fourth quarter, as No. 5 UC San Barbara dealt No. 9 UC San Diego a 10-8 defeat in a nonconference matchup at Canyonview Pool on Oct. 14. The Tritons cut the Gauchos' lead to just a single goal twice in the final frame, but they could not come through with the tying score.

IN THE WWPA: The UC San Diego men's water polo team was picked to finish the 2012 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) season in second place after earning 114 points in the league's annual preseason coaches' poll. The Tritons, the league's defending champion, earned five first-place votes, finishing just behind top-ranked Loyola Marymount, which garnered 116 points and seven first-place votes. UC Davis, which UCSD played in last year's title game, earned 100 points to place third while Air Force earned 91 points to earn fourth.

CWPA STANDINGS: UC San Diego earned the No. 11 spot in the first Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) preseason poll with 51 points, just one point shy of the No. 10 spot taken by conference opponent Loyola Marymount.

A GLANCE AT 2012: The Tritons will play in two tournaments during the regular season among a mix of conference and nonconference games. UCSD doesn't get to WWPA play until Wednesday, Sept. 26 when they host Loyola Marymount. The following weekend they will head to the Socal Tournament hosted by UC Santa Barbara Sept. 29-30. The Tritons final home game will be on Thursday Nov. 8 when they host nonconference UC Irvine at 6:00 p.m. The WWPA Championship Tournament will take place the follow weekend, Nov. 16-18, at Whittier College. Game times and days will depend on each teams regular season finish. The National Championships will occur two weeks after WWPA's conclude. The Champion of the conference tournament gets an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships in Los Angeles.

2011 NOTES: Head Coach Denny Harper won the WWPA Coach of the Year for the 16th time in his career. He has won the conference's top coaching accolade in exactly half of his 32 completed seasons on campus... UCSD returns Brian Donohoe and first-team All-WWPA selection John Butler. Donohoe, who was a second-team All-WWPA selection and a Capital One Academic All-American, has more career goals (84) than any player on UCSD's returning roster and figures to again be one of the Tritons' primary offensive threats. Butler is UCSD's No. 2 returning goal scorer after tallying 33 last fall while earning a team-high 43 assists as well as 26 steals.
