BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team closed out the WWU West Region Crossover Classic on Saturday in a 69-51 defeat to the 14th-ranked Western Washington, the host of the weekend-long tournament.The Tritons drop to 1-4 overall on the season and will take on hosting duties at the UCSD Thanksgiving Classic, where they will face Azusa Pacific (0-3) on Friday at 7 p.m.
Senior guard Daisy Feder topped the Tritons with her 14-point performance while also contributing six rebounds, one assist and two steals. Senior guard Emily Osga hit UCSD's only trey in the game as part of her 11 points. Osga also had four rebounds, tied the game-high with three steals, and had the Tritons only block.
The Vikings were led by senior center Britt Harris's 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Senior guard Trishi Williams matched Osga's three steals.
While WWU outshot the Tritons from the paint, going 22-for-51 (43.1%) over UCSD's 18-for-56 (32.1%), the Tritons shot better from the line, making 14 of 18 (77.8%) as the Vikings sunk 17 of 23 (73.9%). However, the Vikings dominated from the arc. WWU made 8 of 15 (53.3%) from beyond the arc while the Tritons only made one out of 11 (9.1%) for the game. In addition, WWU had eight blocks to UCSD's one.
With only a point separating the teams at the half, the Vikings set the tone for the closing 20 minutes and built their lead back to seven in the opening four minutes of the second half.
But after Osga made a jumper to make the score, 37-32, at the 16:20 mark, it would be the last Triton basket for nearly four-and-a-half minutes. In the interim, the Vikings hit their stride on offense in the form of a 13-0 scoring run.
Feder's layup with 11:54 left in regulation stopped the UCSD scoring drought while the Tritons were down, 50-34.
After trailing by as many as 23 with sophomore guard Jenni White's three-pointer, which made the score, 64-41, with 6:25 to go in the game, the Tritons later went on a 7-0 run. Feder capped off the run with a free throw at the 3:57 mark. Sophomore forward McKennan Bertsch commenced the run with a successful trip to the free-throw line with 5:45 remaining.
The smallest the point deficit was in the final minutes was 16, when Feder sunk a free throw with 3:57 to go, her final point of the game and made the score, 64-48.
Redshirt freshman center Emily Morris' successful three-point play counted as the Tritons' final points of the game, with 1:03 to go.
UCSD struck first in the evening contest when junior forward Erin Dautremont hit a layup 46 seconds into the game, but a jumper by senior center Britt Harris tied the score 13 seconds later at 2-2. The Vikings took the lead on sophomore forward Sydney Donaldson's three-pointer to make the score, 5-2, with 17:40 to go in the first half.
Down by as many as 10, the Tritons battled their way back in the closing minutes of the opening half. Feder made both of her final-minute free throws with 39 seconds left and redshirt freshman Emily Morris converted one of her attempts to bring UCSD within a point, 27-26, with 15 seconds to go.
The Vikings improve to 2-0 and will play their next game against Carroll (2-0) on Friday at 5 p.m. to begin the WWU Lynda Goodrich Classic.
