RIPE FROM THE STRIPE
As a team, UCSD leads the CCAA and ranks sixth nationally in free throw percentage. The Tritons have made 78 of 99 attempts from the line, 78.8 percent. Individually, Tyler McGrath ranks second in the league at 87.5 percent (21-for-24) and James McCann is eighth at 82.1 percent (23-for-28). Over his last four games McCann has been perfect at 16-for-16. McGrath finished the 2011-12 season as the CCAA's leader in free throw percentage at .833.

McSCORERS
Guards Tyler McGrath and James McCann currently rank among the CCAA's top 10 scorers. McGrath is sixth, averaging 16.3 points per game, while McCann is ninth at 13.7. Both have recorded 10 or more points in five of six games this season, which included a career-high 33 for McGrath against Fresno Pacific on Nov. 10.

ASSIST 10
Statisticians have called out the above phrase frequently this season. James McCann leads all CCAA players with his 4.5 assists per game average. He has tallied multiple helpers in all six games to date, including a season-best seven at Cal State San Bernardino, one short of his career high. Last season, McCann averaged 3.9 assists per game, the third-best mark in the league.

PLAYING FOR KEEPS
UCSD has done a commendable job keeping the ball to itself this season. The Tritons are averaging 11.2 turnovers per game, which ranks second in the CCAA and 12th in the country.

I HATE TO BE CLICHE, BUT ...
It really has been a tale of two halves for the Tritons so far this season. In four of six games, UCSD has taken a halftime lead into the locker room, but has gone winless in those contests. Overall in the opening half, UCSD is shooting .436 from the floor compared to .414 for opponents. However, its shooting percentage drops to .388 in the second stanza while the opponents are hitting shots at a .523 clip. The Tritons are out-scoring their competition 31.8 to 29.5 in the first half but getting out-scored 40.3 to 34.0 in the second.

ON THE VERGE OF 600
UCSD'S win against Fresno Pacific on Nov. 10 gave the program its 599th victory. Since the 1965-66 season, the Tritons have accumulated a 599-626 overall record, good for a .489 win percentage.

UNDER 90
Prior to Cal State San Bernardino scoring 90 on Nov. 24, no UCSD opponent had posted a point total that high since Cal State Monterey Bay won 97-93 in double overtime on Jan. 26, 2008 at RIMAC Arena. The last time an opponent put up 90-plus in regulation was on Jan. 4, 2007 when Humboldt State downed the Tritons 90-76 in Arcata.

ALL BUT ONE
UCSD returns all but one of its starters from last season, including full-timers James McCann, Tyler McGrath and Justin Brue, along with part-timers MacKenzie McCullough and Ryan Peters. That group accounted for 61% of the team's scoring and 50% of its rebounds. The lone loss was big man Christian Hatch, who led the Tritons in scoring (12.5/game) and rebounding (7.3/game). The center was named to the All-CCAA Second Team.

CAL STATE L.A. REWIND
Despite a game high 18 points and six assists from James McCann, the Tritons fell, 61-54, against Cal State L.A. at RIMAC Arena on Nov. 30. UCSD trailed by just one at the half (28-27), but made only 28.1 percent of its shots in the second stanza to finish at 31.7 percent for the game. The Golden Eagles shot 42.6 percent and held a 42-34 advantage on the boards. The Tritons had a 44-40 lead with 9:07 left in the game, but an 8-0 run by CSULA put the Eagles up for good. Tyler McGrath had 15 points and Brandon Blanchard totaled 10 points and eight rebounds for UCSD. Joshua Munzon and James Tillman each had 16 points for Cal State L.A.

CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS REWIND
A seven point halftime lead turned into a heartbreaking 58-57 loss against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Dec. 1 in La Jolla. The Tritons again had a lackluster second half, making just 24 percent of their shots. Conversely, the Toros drained 47.8 percent of their attempts in the final frame. Bench scoring played a huge role as CSUDH got 29 points from its non-starters while UCSD had five. The Tritons led 36-29 at the break, but a six point run that began with 12:34 left in the game put the Toros up for good. A Justin Brue layup with just under a minute left got UCSD back within one point at 58-57, but it would be the final time the Tritons found the net. Tyler McGrath led all players with 19 points while Drew Dyer added 13 and James McCann had 10 for UCSD. DeShaun Freeman paced the Toros with 14 points.

A LOOK AT THE GLADIATORS
Pacifica University, located in Covina east of Los Angeles, enters Sunday's game winless at 0-11. The Gladiators have played three California Collegiate Athletic Association teams already this season, losing on the road against Cal State Monterey Bay (104-52), Chico State (70-35) and Cal State L.A. (117-32). Pacifica has played against two NCAA Division I squads, falling at Loyola Marymount (108-49) and at UC Irvine (116-47). Pacifica is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.

A LOOK AT THE COYOTES
Cal State San Bernardino enters this week with a 3-1 overall record and a 3-0 mark in the CCAA, good for a tie for first place. The Coyotes, who are receiving votes in the Dec. 11 national poll, have recorded wins over UC San Diego (90-82), Cal State Dominguez Hills (74-53) and Cal State L.A. (76-69). They were defeated at Westmont College (97-90) to open the season. Brian Goins leads the team in scoring at 20.0 points per game and Pablo Genovo is pulling down a team-best 9.0 rebounds per contest. CSUSB plays a pair of non-conference games before coming to La Jolla, taking on Cal Baptist Dec. 17 and Azusa Pacific Dec. 18.

THE LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE COYOTES
UCSD and Cal State San Bernardino met at Coussoulis Arena back on Nov. 24 with the Coyotes taking a 90-82 victory. The Tritons held a 34-31 lead at the half, but CSUSB shot 65.5 percent in the second half, making 19 of 29 attempts. Four Tritons hit double-digit point totals including Justin Brue, who poured in a career-high 24 while adding a game-high nine rebounds. James McCann finished with 21 points, Brandon Blanchard had 14 and Tyler McGrath totaled 12. UCSD posted a 52.3 shooting percentage, its second highest of the season. San Bernardino had five players in double figures, led by 24 points from Brian Goins
