TURLOCK, Calif. -
The UC San Diego softball team finished up play at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions Sunday with a 2-0 shutout over Hawaii Pacific.
UCSD completed the weekend with a 3-3 record and was the champion of the Silver Bracket. The Tritons are now 24-16 on the year.
Both of UCSD’s runs came in the bottom of the third. The Tritons opened with back-to-back singles by Taylor Sepulveda and Callie Grant. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice by Caitlin Brown, and Sepulveda scored the game's first run on a fly out to right field by Nicole Spangler. In the next at bat, an RBI single by Kirsten Willmon plated Grant to give UCSD a 2-0 lead.
Both Sepulveda and Grant were two-for-three at the plate to lead UCSD.
Jennifer Manuel tossed a complete game, improving to 9-1 with the win. The junior right hander, who was named to the all-tournament team, gave up just four hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Four different players accounted for HPU's four hits. Starter Melissa Kirby (6-7) took the loss. She struck out three and walked none over six innings of work.
The Sea Warriors left eight runners on base.
Cal State Dominguez Hills won the Gold Bracket, while Simon Fraser topped the Bronze Bracket and Academy of Art won the Platinum Bracket. Stephanie Jimenez of CSUDH was named the tournament's MVP.
UCSD returns to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at Cal State Stanislaus April 12-13.
