LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 14 UC San Diego used a 6-0 run to start the second half to beat Navy, 11-9, Friday. Joe Dietrich and Jeffrey Jarvis tallied three goals apiece to power the Tritons, while Cameron Ravanbach amassed seven saves in the cage.

The Tritons improved its record to 7-6 overall, while Navy suffered its ninth consecutive loss and now sits at 8-11 on the year.

“We were concerned about a letdown,” said head coach Denny Harper. “It’s not easy to play all the ball we did in Berkeley and come back to play your rivals [LMU] on a Wednesday night and return to play a really strong team like Navy. This is a rivalry game and these type of games are always tough. I give a lot of kudos to Navy, I think they played really well.”

For the second straight night at Canyonview, UCSD came out of the gate sluggish. Despite the Tritons grabbing the first goal of the game from Dietrich, Navy controlled the first period. The Midshipmen closed the quarter with two straight goals inside to lead 2-1.

Navy continued the attack into the second, tallying four goals to lead 6-4 at halftime. The Midshipmen sustained the assault with its drivers, as Navy received timely passing inside for the scores.

“We couldn’t play drive defense to save our lives,” said Harper. “ We had to make a change and put more pressure on the ball. We were able to wear them down a little bit and that lead to some pretty timely counter attacks.”

After Harper made a few changes out of halftime, UCSD scored six straight times to grab the lead and never look back. Dietrich started the third with a shot that bounced off the post and in, before Matt Michalko whipped a backhand into the back of the cage to tie the game at six.

“I put in some different guys,” said Harper about the 6-0 run. “I found some hungry kids that wanted to play and win.”

The Tritons continued the onslaught in the third with assists from Chase Cockerill and Dietrich to find Jarvis for scores, as UCSD grabbed its first lead of the night up 8-6. From there, Luca De Vivo scored his only goal of the game before Dietrich grabbed his third.

Navy was able to end the 6-0 run with a score at the end of the third period to put the score 10-7 after three.

The Midshipmen made things interesting in the final period, tallying a goal with three minutes remaining to cut the deficit to 10-8. UCSD was able to respond, however, as De Vivo produced a great pass to David Higginson for an open look that found the back of the net.

“In the fourth quarter we had several opportunities to put the ball away that could of iced the ballgame, but couldn’t convert. Overall, I’m happy with how we came back and happy with how we persevered.”

The insurance goal proved to hold, as the Tritons finished off the 11-9 victory for its second straight win.

To complement the six combined goals from Dietrich and Jarvis, Higginson tallied two and De Vivo, Cockerill and Michalko each scored one apiece.

Carl Dowzicky and Robert Sutherland each found the back of the cage twice for Navy, respectively. Garrett Sabesky recorded 10 saves in the loss.

UCSD is back at Canyonview tomorrow to face No. 6 UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m. It marks the second meeting between the two schools in 2013. The Tritons will look to avenge a 17-6 loss suffered at the NorCal Tournament on Sept. 21.
