LOS ANGELES - UC San Diego’s Joe Dietrich was named on Wednesday the Kap7/Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Co-Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 23-29. Caleb Guarino of Air Force also earned the weekly honor.
The junior from Lafayette led No. 12 UCSD to a 2-1 week, highlighted by an 11-7 victory over conference-rival No. 10 Loyola Marymount in front of a crowd of 1,639 at Canyonview Aquatics Center. He totaled seven goals, four assists and three steals in the three games. The award marks the first of his career.
In the win over LMU, Dietrich powered the Tritons with two goals, three assists and a steal. Along with his offensive production, Dietrich was a key component in holding the Lions to three second-half goals with strong two-meter defensive play to produce the victory.
He followed with another solid performance in an 11-9 win over Navy on Friday night. Dietrich opened the game with the first goal of the night and followed with two more scores in the third period. He tallied the first of six straight goals for the Tritons in the quarter, setting up the victory over the Midshipmen. He also produced an assist and steal in the win.
In the final game of the week, Dietrich found the back of the cage twice and grabbed a steal in an 11-7 setback against No. 6 UC Santa Barbara.
Dietrich has amassed 17 goals, 16 assists and 11 steals in 2013. He ranks fifth in assists and 10th in scores for the conference.
UCSD currently sits at 7-7 on the year and 1-0 in the WWPA. The Tritons, who hold a No. 12 ranking in the Collegiate Water Polo Association poll, host No. 1 UCLA at Canyonview Friday. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
