Lizotte Repeats as Player of the Year; Seven Tritons Honored by WWPA
Release: Wednesday 04/23/2014

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – UC San Diego’s Sarah Lizotte was tabbed the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, while six other Tritons were honored by the league Wednesday. Melissa Bartow and Courtney Miller joined Lizotte on the WWPA First Team.

In addition, Jolene Guiliana and Alexis Wieseler were awarded WWPA Second Team honors and Julia Kirkland was a member of the Third Team. Lauren Boyer was the conference’s Newcomer of the Year after earning a place on the All-Freshman Team.

The seven Tritons honored by the league marks a program record for head coach Brad Kreutzkamp.

Lizotte earned her second career Player of the Year honor after scoring 73 goals and dishing out 49 assists in 2014. The Riverside native has now been named an All-WWPA member for the fourth straight season. The senior is UCSD’s all-time career leader in goals scored and assists.

Miller, a sophomore from Honolulu, HI, blocked 304 shots on the season. Her 678 career saves puts her fourth on the school’s all-time saves list. It marks her second consecutive award from the league. Bartow, a two-time team captain, led the Tritons in ejections and penalties drawn in 2014. The senior is UCSD’s all-time leader in both categories. She added 42 goals to her line this season. It marks her third career honor from the conference.

Guiliana, a junior from Irvine, earned her second WWPA honor after scoring 60 goals and dishing out 46 assists, while Wieseler, a sophomore from Highland, was awarded for the second time after finding the back of the cage 42 times.

Kirkland, a sophomore from Corona, is a first time honoree after totaling 43 goals, 22 assists and 34 steals. Boyer turned in a strong first year for the Tritons by tallying 19 scores and 19 steals. The Honolulu, HI native earns her first career award from the WWPA.

UCSD hosts the WWPA Championship at Canyonview Aquatic Center on Apr. 25-27. After completing a perfect 4-0 record in conference play, the Tritons earned the No. 1 seed and will have a first-round bye. UCSD will play its first game at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 26 at Canyonview.
