Four Tritons Earn All-WWPA Conference Honors

LOS ANGELES - The UC San Diego women's water polo team had four student-athletes named to the Western Water Polo Association All-Conference team, it was announced on Wednesday. Hanalei Crowell earned WWPA First Team honors while Kirsten Bates earned WWPA Second Team accolades. Felicia Orozco was named WWPA All-Honorable Mention and Melissa Bartow was placed on the WWPA All-Freshman Team.

It marks the second consecutive season that the Tritons have placed four players on All-WWPA squads. The Tritons finished 9-1 in WWPA play and will take the No. 2 seed to Hayward this weekend for the 2011 WWPA Championships.

Crowell, a senior from Kailua, Hawaii, currently leads the team in goals, assists and steals in 2011. Her 50 assists this season are tied for fifth-most in a single season in program history and her 63 steals sixth-best. Moreover, Crowell's 114 career assists are third-most in school history and her 148 steals rank ninth-best. She has scored four goals in a game twice this season, dishing out a team-best six assists in a match against Colorado State on April 10. Crowell's 49 goals this season increased her career total to 120.

Bates, a 2010 Second Team selection, ranks second on the UCSD squad with 47 goals, 30 assists and 50 steals. She has drawn eight penalties this season and drawn the second-most ejections on the season with 44. Bates has scored four or more goals in a game three times this season. Against Cal State Bakersfield on March 10, Bates tallied three goals, two assists and five steals while drawing a pair of ejections. The junior from Reedley, Calif. has logged 138 goals and her .407 career shooting percentage is 11th-best in school history.

Orozco, senior junior college transfer from Sylmar, scored 37 goals and dished-out 21 assists for the Tritons in 2011. She recorded three goals and an assist during the Tritons' 3-1 run at The Bronco, Apr. 9-10. She scored multiple goals in 11 contests this season, including three goals in matches against Maryland, Loyola Marymount and CSUB.

Bartow, a freshman from Walnut Creek, led all Triton freshman in goals (37) and assists (21), matching Bates with eight penalties drawn this season. She led the team with 56 ejections drawn and shot an amicable .402 in her first year in UCSD colors.

The Tritons open the WWPA Championships on Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against seventh-seeded Cal State Bakersfield at Chabot Community College in Hayward. The Championships will run Friday through Sunday.
