COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 14 UC San Diego cruised to an 11-6 win over Wagner in the opening game of the Terrapin Invitational at the University of Maryland on Saturday morning. However, the Tritons suffered their first loss of the season in the afternoon affair to Maryland, 14-6.
UCSD (2-1) wraps-up the Terrapin Invite on Sunday morning with a tilt against Marist (0-2) at 9:00 a.m.
Melissa Bartow led the way with four goals and Sarah Lizotte pitched-in two scores. UCSD jumped out to a two-goal lead thanks to a pair of goals by Bartow in the opening quarter. She added back-to-back goals to open the second period, giving the Tritons a 5-1 cushion and room to work with the rest of the match.
Brittany Daniels scored her first college goal for the Tritons to make it 6-2, and Rachel Brooks and Jessica Tran traded goals with the Seahawks to give UCSD an 8-4 lead at the half. Each of the teams managed a goal apiece in the third as the Tritons took a four-goal advantage into the final frame.
The teams were scoreless for the first four minutes in the fourth until Katherine Biehle found the net with 3:53 left to give the Tritons their biggest lead of the game, 10-5. Wagner (0-1) responded a minute later to bring it back to four, but Lizotte's goal with a man-up at 2:26 put the final touches on UCSD's 11-6 victory.
Lizotte scored four times and Natalie Peng added two goals, but the Tritons fell victim to a slow second quarter in their 14-6 loss to the University of Maryland (2-0).
Tied 4-4 after the first, the Terrapins were able to outscore the Tritons 5-1 in the second frame to push their lead to 9-5 at the break. UCSD managed to get a goal back in the third period, but Maryland held the Tritons scoreless in the final stanza to take an eight-goal win.
The Tritons are 8-2 all-time against the Terrapins.
