EMPTY IN IRVINE
UCSD came up empty in four games at the UC Irvine Invitational last weekend, falling 14-3 to No. 1 Stanford, 15-11 to No. 9 San Jose State, 14-6 to No. 13 UC Davis and 8-7 to No. 20 Long Beach State. UCSD took 16th place at the tournament. The Tritons are now 2-5 against ranked teams and 5-6 against non-conference opponents. Sophomore Sarah Lizotte led the Tritons with seven goals over four games, while Kirsten Bates finished with six goals. Lizotte and Bates also placed one-two in the steals column, finishing with nine and six, respectively. Jessica Tran added five assists. The four-game skid is the Tritons' longest of the season.

A DAY IN THE ‘PARK
The Tritons head to Rohnert Park on Friday afternoon to face Sonoma State in Western Water Polo Association play at Dr. G Edward Rudloff Pool. UCSD is 10-1 all-time against SSU, its only loss coming on April 24, 2009 at the WWPA championships. Since then, the Tritons have won five consecutive games over the Seawolves including a 14-10 victory in 2011 at the UCSB Winter Invite. Bates tallied three goals and five steals in the game, while Leah Gonzales pitched-in a pair of scores. Bridgette Souza leads SSU with 27 goals, more than double any other Seawolf this season.

GETTIN' SPACIFIC
UCSD is 7-3 all-time against Pacific, who the Tritons face in the first game of the Aggie Shootout on Saturday. The Tigers came from behind to down the Tritons 9-6 at last season's Aztec Invitational on March 12, 2011. Tran scored twice in the game and Bates added two steals, but UOP was able to overpower the Tritons, who had played a double-overtime contest against Princeton in the morning session. Prior to that match, UCSD had won the previous three matches against UOP, twice on the road.

YOU SEE DAVIS
The Aggies and Tritons will clash for the second time in a week when the teams meet on Saturday afternoon for the Aggie Shootout finale. UCD's Hannah Curran and Alicia Began completed hat tricks in Sunday's 14-6 win by the Aggies. Tran was the only Triton to score multiple goals in the contest for UCSD. The Aggie victory was the widest margin of victory in the rivalry between the teams, either way, dating back to when both teams competed in the WWPA. 20 of the previous 30 meetings had been settled by a single goal. UCSD is 19-27 all-time against UCD.

THE UNUSUAL SUSPECTS
A trio of Triton players registered their first goals of the season at the UCI Invite. Lindsay Holbrook, a junior transfer, scored the first goal of her career in the opening game against Stanford and followed with a goal against San Jose State. Colette Gulick, a freshman, also tallied the first goal of her career in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game with UC Davis. Hannah Guthman matched her season total from 2011 with two goals in the second quarter against SJSU.

MAJ-IC
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Tala Majaj received the first significant playing time of her career at the UCI Invite, as usual starter Allie Taylor was rested on the first day due to a minor injury. She played three quarters in each game against Stanford and San Jose State, stopping 10 shots while making three steals. She limited UC Davis to just a pair of goals in the fourth quarter of UCSD's third game of the Invite.

IT'S WORTH MENTIONING...
With seven more shots, Bates will move into seventh place all-time for career attempts in UCSD history ... Bates has 145 career steals and needs just a pair more to move into the Top 10 for steals in school annals ... Tran is averaging two assists per game with 28 over her team's first 14 contests ... With at least 21 matches remaining, if Tran keeps up that pace, she will finish with 70 assists to set UCSD's single-season record, held by current Athletics Program Coordinator Danielle Boyle (60, 2003) ... Lizotte recorded four steals in UCSD's loss to LBSU, a season high for the Tritons ... UCSD's last losing streak of more than three games was six games between March 12-25, 2011 ... The Tritons rattled off three consecutive victories following that skid.
