UCSD Comes Away with Series Split After Losing Sunday Finale to SF State
Release: Sunday 04/07/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego allowed six runs in the second inning and never recovered in an 11-3 loss to San Francisco State University in the finale of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) baseball series at Triton Ballpark on Sunday.

With the result, UCSD fell to 19-17 overall and an even 14-14 in the CCAA. San Francisco State improved to 12-24 overall and 9-19 in league play. The teams split the weekend set, with the Tritons having swept Saturday’s doubleheader, 9-6 and 7-5 in seven innings, after the Gators took a 4-1 decision in Friday night’s opener.

Senior leftfielder Richard Seigel stroked his league-leading ninth home run out to right field on the first pitch of his fourth-inning at-bat with two away to put UCSD on the scoreboard, but his team was already facing a 7-0 deficit at that point after SF State sent 11 men to the plate in its six-run second.

SF State out-hit UCSD on the afternoon, 14-7. The Tritons used seven pitchers in all, with junior left-handed starter Justin Rahn (0-1) taking the loss. David Hart tossed 2.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in his immediate relief.

Freshman right-handed starter Nolan Sheridan (4-0) went seven innings for the Gators to earn the win, allowing two runs, one of them earned, on four hits and three walks. He struck out six.

Grady Espinosa had a banner day going 4-for-6 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI. Senior shortstop Miguel Flores was 2-for-4 with his team-leading second home run, just the third long ball on the year by a Gator, two walks, three runs and two RBI. The Gators turned four double plays defensively.

Triton rightfielder Scott Liske made a nice running catch toward the foul line on a Joseph Chedid drive in the fifth, with Danny Susdorf doing the same on Espinosa against the center field wall in the ninth. With Gators at the corners and no outs in the eighth, freshman right-hander Justin Donatella sprung off the mound to glove a slow roller up the third base line and threw to catcher Nick La Face to complete an agile fielder’s choice play at the plate. The Tritons also turned a pair of twin killings.

Rahn retired the first batter of the game and went 0-2 to Espinosa before the junior leftfielder got things going for the visitors with a harmless-looking bleeder to third base that went down as an infield single. Three hitters later, with two gone and runners at first and second, senior first baseman A.J. Pianto flipped an RBI single just over the leaping reach of Triton shortstop Dillon Moyer and into left center. That made it 1-0, and the Gators led throughout.

UCSD returns to action this Tuesday night, Apr. 9, for the rubber contest of its three-game season series with crosstown rival Point Loma Nazarene. First pitch at Triton Ballpark is set for 6 p.m.

Triton Notes: Nick La Face has started 93 straight games … Richard Seigel has started 73 games in a row … UCSD is 0-5 in games this season in which it has surrendered a double-digit runs total, with three of them now coming at home over the last nine games … The 11 runs were a season high for SF State.
