CORNING, Calif. - In its opening tournament of the fall season, the UC San Diego men's golf team tied for eighth of 15 squads at the InterWest Insurance Wildcat Classic, hosted by Chico State at Sevillano Links in Northern California. Sophomore Clayton Yamaguchi tied for seventh overall.

The tournament's third round, which was scheduled for a Tuesday morning start, was canceled due to extremely high winds in the area, which clocked in at a sustained 25 miles per hour. Two rounds (36 holes) were completed Monday, making the tourney and its results official.

UCSD shot a two-round total of 607, 31-over par on the par-72, 6,917-yard course. The Tritons went 307 in the opening round and lowered their score to 300 in the second.

Yamaguchi finished even at 144, tied with Nick Hardy of Northwest Nazarene. After shooting a 5-over 77 in the first round, he settled in to fire a 5-under 67 in the second, one stroke off the tournament record. Following a double bogey on his 14th hole, Yamaguchi rebounded to birdie his next two.

It was the first outing for new UCSD head coach Jim Ragan, who arrived on campus just a week ago.

"I really enjoyed seeing our guys compete for the first time," said Ragan, who has also served as head golf coach at Oklahoma, Texas and Vanderbilt. "We had a couple of bright spots, including Clayton's 67 in the second round and Jacob (Williams) shooting a 29 on the front nine in round one. On the other hand, we lost a lot of shots out there."

Chico State, ranked 12th nationally, won with a 5-under 571 and was the only team below par. No. 10 Cal State Stanislaus took second place, eight strokes back with a 3-over 579. Cal State East Bay was third (+17, 593), Simon Fraser finished fourth (+18, 594) and Western Washington rounded out the top five (+21, 597).

Chico State's Ricky Owaki won the individual title with a -7, 137. He tied the tournament record with a 66 in the second round. Anthony Manguray of Cal State Stanislaus finished second (-4, 140) and three players tied for third at 2-under, 142.

Also competing for UCSD, sophomore Daniel Yang (San Diego/Westview HS) tied for 34th (+8, 152), senior Jacob Williams tied for 40th (+9, 153), senior Lewis Simon tied for 57th (+14, 158) and junior Jay Lim tied for 62nd (+15, 159).

Last season, UCSD was 11th after two rounds and wound up ninth overall at the Wildcat Classic.

The Tritons play in two more tournaments during the fall, including the Sonoma State Invitational (Oct. 14-15) and the Otter Invitational (Oct. 21-22), hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay.
