SANTA ROSA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team completed play at the Sonoma State Invitational Tuesday, finishing third in a field of 14 schools at the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. Jay Lim remained UCSD's top player, placing in a three-way tie for fifth.
The Tritons finished with a three-round total of 880, 16-over par. They shot a 293 Tuesday after posting rounds of 302 and 285 Monday, dropping a spot in the standings between day one and day two.
Lim, on the other hand, improved his placing Tuesday, firing a 1-over 73 to finish with a 3-over 219 on the 6,733-yard layout at Santa Rosa. The junior stood in seventh following rounds of 76 and 70 on Monday. His fifth-place finish tied him with Eric Ash and Kyle Listar of Sonoma State.
It was Lim's best placing since tying for fourth at the 2012 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships as a freshman.
Lim led the 74-player field in par-5 scoring, going 7-under with a 4.42 stroke average on the long holes.
Sophomore Clayton Yamaguchi also earned a top 10 finish for UCSD, tying for 10th with a 5-over 221 (73-75-73). Sophomore Daniel Yang (San Diego/Westview HS) tied for 12th (75-76-71--222, +6), senior Jacob Williams tied for 19th (78-69-78--225, +9) and senior Lewis Simon tied for 23rd (79-71-76--226, +10).
"Overall, we had a good round today," said UCSD head coach Jim Ragan. "We had the second-lowest third round team score. Daniel played well, shooting a sub-par round, and Clayton and Jay played solidly as well."
Sonoma State, which led by 16 strokes at the end of the day Monday, retained its position, shooting a 295 Tuesday to end up 2-over with an 866. Sixth-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay totaled a tournament-best 282 Tuesday to jump ahead of UCSD and place second with a 13-over 877, 11 strokes behind SSU and just three in front of the Tritons.
California University of Pennsylvania (892, +28) and Valdosta State (899, +35) were a distant fourth and fifth, respectively.
Individually, the top of the leaderboard saw some shuffling Tuesday. Northwest Nazarene's Nick Hardy, third after Monday's rounds, won the title, finishing with a 5-under 211. Monterey Bay's Dylan Jackson, sixth coming into Tuesday, and Sonoma's Matt Medeiros, who was in first after rounds one and two, tied for second, each with a 1-under 215.
UCSD ranked second in par-5 scoring (4.88, -7) and total birdies (41) and tied for second in par-3 scoring (3.28, +17).
The Tritons took third at last season's Sonoma State Invitational as well.
