Tritons Upset in Five Sets by Cal State L.A.
Release: Saturday 10/19/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 10th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team saw its seven-match win streak come to an end Saturday night as it was upset in five sets by Cal State L.A. at RIMAC Arena.

Scores were 25-21, 17-25, 25-22, 13-25 and 22-20 in favor of CSULA. UCSD fell to 16-3 overall and 8-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Golden Eagles improved to 12-7 and 7-4.

Down 20-19 in the marathon fifth set, Cal State L.A. won it with three straight points on a kill by Kymberly Silveyra and back-to-back kills from Iona Lofrano.

UCSD was led by sophomore outside hitters Sophie Rowe and Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) with 21.5 and 21.0 points, respectively. Rowe had a team-high 20 kills with 15 digs and a pair of blocks. Dahle finished with 19 kills, 14 digs and three blocks. She hit .400 with three errors in 40 attacks.

Sara McCutchan had 11 kills and seven blocks for the Tritons, while Caitlin Brenton and Kameron Cooper each posted seven kills and four blocks. Setter Heidi Sierks had 53 assists and libero Brittany Lombardi led the team defensively with 27 digs.

Silveyra put down a match-high 31 kills on the night and hit .338 with eight errors in 68 swings. She also added 19 digs. Lofrano had 20 kills and 11 digs, while April Reyes dug a match-best 32 balls. Setter Alexandra Bura dished out 66 assists to go along with 12 digs and four blocks.

UCSD out-hit its opponent .265 to .226, but CSULA held a 77-67 advantage in total kills. The Tritons out-blocked the Golden Eagles, 13.0 to 8.5. At the service line, UC San Diego committed four errors while Cal State L.A. totaled 11.

UCSD led by as many as five points in the fifth set, including at 11-6. However, CSULA won five of the next six points to get within one at 12-11. Following a McCutchan kill, the Golden Eagles tied it 13-13 with a Silveyra kill and a Triton attack error. A kill by Rowe gave UCSD a 14-13 lead, but an ensuing attack error allowed Cal State L.A. to stay in it. The Tritons earned five more match points, but couldn't put away the stingy Golden Eagles.

UCSD hadn't suffered a loss since Sept. 25, when it was defeated, 3-1, at Cal State San Bernardino. It was the first home loss for the Tritons, who are now 6-1 at RIMAC Arena this season. The last time the team dropped a five-set match was back on Oct. 10, 2012, also at Cal State San Bernardino.

Prior to the match, the inaugural UCSD Athletics Hall of Fame class was introduced and banners were unveiled on the arena wall. The eight honorees will officially be inducted Sunday morning during a ceremony on campus.

UCSD, which plays its next six matches at home, hosts Sonoma State on Friday, Oct. 25, and San Francisco State on Saturday, Oct. 26, to open the second half of the CCAA season. The match against the Gators will be a Dig For a Cure event in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
