The UC San Diego men’s tennis team opens 2014 ranked fourth in the West and 14th nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) listings. The Tritons went 13-11 last year and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Championships.

The Tritons lost only one player to graduation, Camill Salomon, who played at the No.1 position and finished the season with a singles record of 12-9 and a doubles mark of 11-12. Max Jiganti had a great season last year and will be a senior for the Tritons this year. Playing in the No. 2 singles spot, Jiganti compiled a 14-6 record, the most wins on the team. He played the majority of his doubles contests at No. 2 with Kona Luu, earning a 16-5 record for the year. Jiganti comes into the season ranked eighth in singles and fourth in doubles in the West Region. Also ranked among the top 20 singles players in the West is senior Maxence Dutreix at No. 17.

UC San Diego kicked off its 2013 fall season at the ITA West Region Championships in Los Angeles, where Jiganti advanced to the quarterfinals in singles and the semifinals in doubles with Devon Sousa as his partner. The Tritons then went on to face Arizona, Grand Canyon, Loyola Marymount, Pacific, San Diego State, UC Irvine, UCLA and USC at the Aztec Invitational. Dutreix and Guy Giubilato won their first round match-ups to move into the winners’ bracket. At the UCSB Classic in Santa Barbara, two of UCSD’s doubles teams finished third out of eight squads. The fall season closed at the 57th annual So Cal Intercollegiate Championships, where Jiganti posted solid results for UCSD, winning matches in the main draw of both singles and doubles.

The University of San Diego is 43rd nationally in the most recent ITA rankings. Clarke Spinosa kicked off the season as the co-singles champion at Harvard’s Chowder Fest Tournament. Uros Petronijevic won the singles title at the USTA Wildcard Shoot Out. At the Aztec Invitational, the Toreros went 3-3 in singles and 1-1 in doubles. USD had a strong showing at the ITA Regionals, where Petronijevis advanced to the round of 16 in singles and the round of 32 in doubles with Andrew Raphaelson to finish the 2013 fall season. USD opened 2014 at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, with three Toreros reaching finals. Most recently, USD was edged by Alabama, 4-3, at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

UC Irvine is currently 1-6 overall with a national ranking of No. 75. The Anteaters started 2014 off at a tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they went 5-1 with a win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. They then lost in Los Angeles against UCLA. Ryan Cheung is the No. 1 player and holds a 1-5 record thus far in singles and a 2-1 record in doubles with Jonathan Hammel as his partner. Rafeal Davidian plays No. 2 and currently has a 2-2 singles record.
