ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The 13th-ranked UC San Diego women’s water polo team opened Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) play with 30 goals in two wins Saturday at Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool. The Tritons swept action with a pair of 15-6 wins over Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay.
UCSD improves to 20-10 overall and 2-0 in WWPA action. The pair of wins puts the Tritons in sole possession of first place in conference.
After a sluggish opening quarter, UCSD responded with 15 goals in the final three periods to earn the 16-6 win over Sonoma State.
Kirkland made the score 1-0 with the first goal of the game before Sonoma State tied the game at 1-1 after the end of one period. The Tritons scored four times in the second, including two tallies from Lizotte, to give UCSD a 5-3 advantage at the intermission.
UCSD closed out the win with 10 goals in the final two periods, including three from Guiliana in the fourth quarter, and kept the Seawolves at bay with only three goals allowed to win, 16-6.
Guiliana and Kirkland tallied three goals apiece in the win.
The Tritons now stand 15-1 all-time against Sonoma State with the win.
The Tritons led from start to finish in the nightcap to down the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay, 15-6.
UCSD opened the game with four straight scores, including two from Guiliana, to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead. After an Otter goal, the Tritons received goals from Lizotte and Lauren Boyer to make the score 6-1 after the first quarter.
The Tritons followed with a strong second period with four tallies and held CSUMB scoreless to make the score at halftime 9-1.
UCSD finished out the win with six goals in the final two periods, highlighted by a pair of scores from Lani Tittle in the fourth, to seal the 15-6 victory over the Otters.
UCSD now holds a perfect 7-0 all-time record against Cal State Monterey Bay following the win.
Guiliana and Lizotte led the charge offensively with a hat trick each.
The Tritons continue WWPA play tomorrow at Santa Clara’s Sullivan Aquatic Center against Cal State East Bay at 11:30 a.m. The Tritons also face Pacific in a non-conference matchup at 3 p.m.
