Heidi Runyan is in her 10th season as head coach of the UC San Diego fencing program in 2013-14.

Runyan's overall goal is to continue to develop strong, competitive and cohesive teams. By utilizing rigorous practice techniques, she prepares her team for competitive success in USFA individual tournaments, Intercollegiate Conference team meets, NCAA Regionals and the NCAA National Championships.

Runyan's squads have captured nine consecutive men's and women's IFCSC titles. She has twice been named NCAA West Region Coach of the Year and four of her fencers have earned All-America honors.

She coached UCSD's 2012-13 fencing team to another standout year in which the Tritons earned their ninth consecutive IFCSC championships on both the men's and women's sides. At home for the NCAA West Regionals, Adam Campbell-Kruger (men's epee) and Luc Ginestet (men's epee) placed third and seventh, respectively, punching their tickets to the NCAA Championships in San Antonio, Texas. It was the second consecutive year that Runyan sent a pair of fencers to the NCAA's.

In addition to her extensive coaching experience, Runyan has many years of competitive fencing under her belt. She began fencing in Hollywood under legendary coach and Olympian Ralph Faulkner and was then trained by Hall of Fame fencing Master Delmar Calvert as a collegiate fencer at Cal State L.A.

She returned to fencing in the mid 1990s and spent several years as a ranked USFA senior fencer in both foil and sabre. She trained under Dmitry Guy in sabre and is a three-time Pacific Coast Champion in women's sabre. Continuing to compete in both veteran foil and sabre, Runyan has been a member of four Veteran World Fencing Championship teams.

Runyan has a bachelor's degree in business management. She is married to Triton assistant coach Josh Runyan. The couple have two adult children.
