Matt Ustaszewski enters his seventh season on the UC San Diego men's water polo staff in 2016. This is his third season as the associate head coach, having been promoted to that post in late January 2013, following three years as an assistant at his alma mater.

Ustaszewski returned to UCSD in 2010 after a very successful stint at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. He served as the Jaguars' men's water polo head coach for four years (2006-2009), while also instructing health and exercise science courses. Ustaszewski was named the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference coach of the year in 2007 and 2009. Prior to taking over the water polo program, Ustaszewski spent time as the men's and women's swimming and diving head coach at Southwestern College, while also assisting with both the men's and women's water polo teams.

Ustaszewski is no stranger to the La Jolla campus. He was a captain for the fifth-ranked Triton water polo team as a senior in 2003. He graduated in 2004 with a 3.5 grade-point average while completing his bachelor's degree in European history. Ustaszewski earned his teaching credential in social studies from San Diego State University in 2007 and his Masters degree in physical education at Azusa Pacific University in 2011. Before attending UC San Diego, Ustaszewski was an All-American at Sierra Community College and Rocklin High School in Rocklin, CA. He still holds career records in goals scored at both Sierra College and Rocklin High School.

In addition to serving as an associate head coach at UCSD, Ustaszewski is the head coach for the Sunset San Diego water polo club team. He has coached the Sunset 40’s team to four straight USWP Masters Nationals Championships (2011-2014). He also serves as the USA Water Polo Olympic Development Head Coach for the Pacific Southwest Zone Youth Men’s Team. In 2014, Ustaszewski was selected as the USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program’s Top Coach.

During his six years on staff, Ustaszewski has helped lead the Tritons to four WWPA Championships and automatic berths to the NCAA National Championships. He has recruited and coached 18 All-Americans, including two WWPA Players of the Year and four WWPA Tournament Most Valuable Players. During 2011-2015, the Tritons appeared in five consecutive WWPA Championship games, which included consecutive titles from 2013-15.
