Josh Runyan is in his 13th year as a coach with the UC San Diego fencing program in 2015-16. He was named Associate Head Coach in July of 2015.

Following the 2014-15 season, Runyan was named the Western Fencing Conference (WFC) Coach of the Year. He helped lead the UCSD women to a WFC championship at the NCAA West Regionals, where the Tritons triumphed over Stanford.

Runyan does much of the recruiting for the Tritons, and is the chairman of UCSD’s annual BladeRunner tournament. He also spent four years on the NCAA Fencing Championship Committee.

He holds coaching titles of Prevot in sabre and foil from the United States Fencing Coaches Association.

Runyan began fencing in college at Cal State L.A. under USFA Hall of Fame Fencing Master Delmar Calvert and later trained in sabre under interim U.S. national coach Dmitriy Guy.

In the 1990s, he spent many years on the U.S. senior national rankings. Runyan has also been on five U.S. Armed Forces Fencing Teams at Military World Championships. He is a six time Pacific Coast individual sabre champion and has won numerous North American Cups/Summer Nationals as a veteran fencer.

A three-time member of the U.S. Veteran’s World Team, Runyan was the silver medalist at the 2011 Veteran’s World Championship (V50 Men’s Sabre).

Runyan spent four years active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps and nine years flying F-14s for the U.S. Navy. He is also a Boeing 767 captain for a major airline.

He holds a bachelor's in history and a master's in Christian Apologetics.

Married to UCSD head coach Heidi Runyan, they have two grown children.
