The 2014 season was JJ Van Niel's third as an assistant coach with the UC San Diego men's volleyball program.

Alongside his duties with the Tritons, Van Niel serves as a coach with San Diego's COAST Volleyball Club, as well as an assistant coach for the varsity girl's volleyball team at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad. He helped guide the Lady Mavericks to their record ninth straight CIF San Diego Section championship in 2012 after finishing the prior year as the Division II state runners-up.

Over the years at COAST, several of Van Niel's travel teams have qualified for the open division at the USA Volleyball Junior Olympics. In 2012, his 16-1 side was crowned national champions after winning the gold medal in Columbus, Ohio, and in 2013, his 17-1 squad earned bronze in Dallas, Texas.

In addition, Van Niel is involved in the USA Volleyball women's program, and is aiding national team head coach Karch Kiraly and his staff in preparing Team USA for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. He served as a consultant coach while the U.S. women completed an incredible run to their very first gold medal at the 2014 FIVB World Championship, the Americans defeating China, 3-1, in the final in Milan, Italy, on Oct. 12. Van Niel was previously a technical coordinator at the 2013 FIVB Women's U23 World Championship in Mexico in October of 2013, with Team USA placing fourth.

Around his volleyball coaching ventures, Van Niel worked from 1998-2010 as an analyst in the financial sector in California.

Van Niel graduated cum laude from the University of Southern California in 1998 with a degree in business administration. He and his wife, Maria, have three children, Kaleb, Olivia and Nathaniel.
