Former soccer player Annette Ilg was in Kenya from May 28 through June 10, 2012.

"I was working with other medical, PhD and pre-medical students from an organization called Straw to Bread. We were focusing on a group of Luo people called Bethlehem Home, which is comprised of 60 orphans and elders (the elders are primarily widows).

Our goal is to provide medical care, housing, education and a means of income for all 60 members as well as any additional members we can target. We were living and working in an extremely rural village that doesn't actually have a name but is between the towns of Sondu and Bodi in the Nyanza province on top of the Nykach plateau.

Three of the research projects we were focusing on during my time there included: malaria prevalence and education, women's health awareness/STI and HIV screening and an agriculture study to promote farming and best utilization of the land. Our group also ran a clinic for two weeks to provide free medical care for all of the province and we built a primary school called Kuoko Academy."
