UC San Diego Competes at Sacramento State Invitational, Wins Novice Four Race
Release: Saturday 03/11/2017
by UCSD

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's rowing team began its spring season Saturday at the Sacramento State Invitational on Lake Natoma.

The Tritons rowed against a field comprised of  Sacramento State, Portland, Humboldt State, Saint Mary's, Orange Coast College and Mills College.

In the Varsity 8 race, UCSD placed fifth with a time of 6:49.1, coming in less than a second behind West Region rival Humboldt State. Sacramento State won in 6:33.2. The Triton crew was made up of coxswain Marie Kawahara, Brooke Campbell, Sarah Moore, Alana Zaleski, Evelyn Brady, Tonya Khounani, Sydney McGuire, Catherine Mosher and Nicole Hammonds.

"Overall, it was a good first race for us," said UCSD head coach Colin Truex. "The Varsity 8 set the tone with a very tight race against Division I crew St. Mary’s and regional rival Humboldt State. While we came up a little short, the lineup is young and has tremendous potential for growth. I believe it is going to be close with HSU all season long for the chance to go to the NCAA Championships."

UCSD took first place in the Novice 4 race, finishing with a time of 8:13.9. Humboldt State came in second, just three ticks behind at 8:16.9. Saint Mary's was third in 9:02.8 and Mills finished fourth at 9:43.5. Rowing for the Tritons were coxswain Larissa Morse, Caitlin Tribelhorn, Natalie Davoodi, Jessica Davis and Allison Patacsil.

The Second Varsity 8 event saw UCSD place fourth with a time of 7:11.2. Sacramento State captured the top spot with a 6:50.0 finish.

In the Novice 8/Third Varsity 8 race, the Tritons placed second with a time of 7:18.9, just short of Orange Coast (7:16.7). UCSD's B boat took fifth, posting a time of 7:46.3.

The Varsity 4 featured another Sacramento State win with a top time of 7:48.8. UCSD finished fourth with an 8:18.4.

The Second Varsity 4 top spot belonged to Humboldt State's B crew with a time of 7:41.4. UC San Diego was fifth in 8:12.3.

"The team performed very well for the first 2k event of the season. Each boat had aspects of the race that went according to plan, as well as parts that we need to improve on."
