No. 3 UC San Diego Heads to Sacramento for WIRA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The No. 3 University of California San Diego women’s rowing team will take part in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships this weekend.


The WIRA Championships will take place on Lake Natoma at the Nimbus Flat State Park on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the action will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at approximately 6 p.m. The following day, races will start at 8 a.m. once again and will finish around 12:45 p.m.

On day one, the Tritons will compete in heat two of the Women’s Varsity 8 - D2/D3/Club (8:50 a.m.), heat one of the Women’s Second Varsity 8 – D2/D3/Club (9:50 a.m.), heat one of the Women’s Novice 8 (10:30 a.m.), and heat two of the Women’s Varsity 4 - D2/D3/Club (11:50 a.m.).


Admission is $10 per person per day, and must be paid in cash. Parking is $10 per vehicle and is also cash only. Attendees should park at the Hartford & Health Net buildings in the Gold Point Office Park. Shuttles will pick up attendees from that location and drop them off at the finish line tent. “I am looking for the team to be at their best this weekend,” said Head Coach Colin Truex. “It is a championship and we train for this all season long. They have to race confidently and really reach down for another gear. I believe they can do it!”


UC San Diego is ranked third in the nation in the most recent US Rowing/CRCA Poll, which was released on April 24. Additionally, the Tritons hold second as a team in the latest NCAA Regional Rankings. The UC San Diego Varsity Four earned second while the Varsity 8 rank third. Next, the Tritons will travel to Philadelphia to race at the 81st annual Dad Vail Regatta. The races will take place from May 10-11.
